  25.      The boundless heavens serve as a back-drop for the MAIN TITLE,
  26.      followed by a ROLL-UP, which crawls into infinity.
  27.  
  28.                Episode VI:
  29.  
  30.                REVENGE OF THE JEDI...
  31.                Luke Skywalker has returned to his home
  32.                planet of Tatooine in an attempt to rescue
  33.                his friend Han Solo from the clutches of the
  34.                vile gangster Jabba the Hutt.
  35.  
  36.                Little does Luke know that the GALACTIC
  37.                EMPIRE has secretly begun construction on a
  38.                new armored space station even more powerful
  39.                than the first dreaded Death Star.
  40.  
  41.                When completed, this ultimate weapon will
  42.                spell certain doom for the small band of
  43.                Rebels struggling to restore freedom to the
  44.                galaxy...
  45.  
  46.      PAN DOWN to reveal a monstrous half-completed Death Star, its
  47.      massive superstructure curling away from the completed section
  48.      like the arms of a giant octopus. Beyond, in benevolent contrast,
  49.      floats the small, green moon of ENDOR.
  50.  
  51.      An Imperial Star Destroyer moves overhead toward the massive
  52.      armored space station, followed by two zipping TIE fighters. A
  53.      small Imperial shuttle rockets from the main bay of the ship and
  54.      hustles toward the Death Star.
  55.  
  56. 2    INT IMPERIAL SHUTTLE - COCKPIT                                  2
  57.  
  58.      The shuttle captain makes contact with the Death Star.
  59.  
  60.                               SHUTTLE CAPTAIN
  61.                Command station, this is ST 321. Code
  62.                Clearance Blue. We're starting our approach.
  63.                Deactivate the security shield.
  64.  
  65.                               DEATH STAR CONTROLLER
  66.                               (filtered VO)
  67.                The security deflector shield will be
  68.                deactivated when we have confirmation of your
  69.                code transmission. Stand by... You are clear
  70.                to proceed.
  71.  
  72.                               SHUTTLE CAPTAIN
  73.                We're starting our approach.
  74.  
  75. 3    INT DEATH STAR - CONTROL ROOM                                   3

  77.      Operators move about among the control panels. A SHIELD OPERATOR
  78.      hits switches beside a large screen, on which is a display of the
  79.      Death Star, the moon Endor, and a bright web delineating the
  80.      invisible deflector shield.
  81.  
  82.      A control officer rushes over to the shield operator.
  83.  
  84.                               OFFICER
  85.                Inform the commander that Lord Vader's
  86.                shuttle has arrived.
  87.  
  88.                               OPERATOR
  89.                Yes, sir.
  90.  
  91.      The control officer moves to a view port and watches as the
  92.      Imperial shuttle lands in the massive docking bay. A squad of
  93.      Imperial stormtroopers moves into formation before the craft.
  94.  
  95. 4    INT DEATH STAR - MAIN DOCKING BAY                               4
  96.  
  97.      The DEATH STAR COMMANDER, MOFF JERJERROD, a tall, confident
  98.      technocrat, strides through the assembled troops to the base of
  99.      the shuttle ramp. The troops snap to attention; many are uneasy
  100.      about the new arrival. But the Death Star commander stands
  101.      arrogantly tall.
  102.  
  103.      The exit hatch of the shuttle opens with a WHOOSH, revealing only
  104.      darkness. Then, heavy FOOTSTEPS AND MECHANICAL BREATHING. From
  105.      this black void appears DARTH VADER, LORD OF THE SITH. Vader
  106.      looks over the assemblage as he walks down the ramp.
  107.  
  108.                               JERJERROD
  109.                Lord Vader, this is an unexpected pleasure.
  110.                We're honored by your presence.
  111.  
  112.                               VADER
  113.                You may dispense with the pleasantries,
  114.                Commander. I'm here to put you back on
  115.                schedule.
  116.  
  117.      The commander turns ashen and begins to shake.
  118.  
  119.                               JERJERROD
  120.                I assure you, Lord Vader, my men are working
  121.                as fast as they can.
  122.  
  123.                               VADER
  124.                Perhaps I can find new ways to
  125.                motivate them.
  126.  
  127.                               JERJERROD
  128.                I tell you, this station will be operational
  129.                as planned.
  130.  
  131.                               VADER
  132.                The Emperor does not share your
  133.                optimistic appraisal of the situation.
  134.  
  135.                               JERJERROD
  136.                But he asks the impossible. I need more men.
  137.  
  138.                               VADER
  139.                Then perhaps you can tell him when he
  140.                arrives.
  141.  
  142.                               JERJERROD (aghast)
  143.                The Emperor's coming here?
  144.  
  145.                               VADER
  146.                That is correct, Commander. And he is most
  147.                displeased with your apparent lack of
  148.                progress.
  149.  
  150.                               JERJERROD
  151.                We shall double our efforts.
  152.  
  153.                               VADER
  154.                I hope so, Commander, for your sake. The
  155.                Emperor is not as forgiving as I am.
  156.  
  157. 5    EXT ROAD TO JABBA'S PALACE - TATOOINE                           5
  158.  
  159.      A lonely, windswept road meanders through the desolate Tatooine
  160.      terrain. We HEAR a familiar BEEPING and a distinctive reply
  161.      before catching sight of ARTOO-DETOO and SEE-THREEPIO, making
  162.      their way along the road toward the ominous palace of Jabba the
  163.      Hutt.
  164.  
  165.                               THREEPIO
  166.                Of course I'm worried. And you should be,
  167.                too. Lando Calrissian and poor Chewbacca
  168.                never returned from this awful place.
  169.  
  170.      Artoo whistles timidly.
  171.  
  172.                               THREEPIO
  173.                Don't be so sure. If I told you half the
  174.                things I've heard about this Jabba the Hutt,
  175.                You'd probably short-circuit.
  176.  
  177.      The two droids fearfully approach the massive gate to the palace.
  178.  
  179.                               THREEPIO
  180.                Artoo, are you sure this is the right place?
  181.                I better knock, I suppose.
  182.  
  183. 6    EXT JABBA'S PALACE - GATE                                       6
  184.  
  185.      Threepio looks around for some kind of signaling device, then
  186.      timidly knocks on the iron door.
  187.  
  188.                               THREEPIO (instantly)
  189.                There doesn't seem to be anyone there. Let's
  190.                go back and tell Master Luke.
  191.  
  192.      A small hatch in the middle of the door opens and a spidery
  193.      mechanical arm, with a large electronic eyeball on the end, pops
  194.      out and inspects the two droids.
  195.  
  196.                               STRANGE VOICE
  197.                Tee chuta hhat yudd!
  198.  
  199.                               THREEPIO
  200.                Goodness gracious me!
  201.  
  202.      Threepio points to Artoo, then to himself.
  203.  
  204.                               THREEPIO
  205.                Artoo Detoowha bo Seethreepiowha ey toota odd
  206.                mischka Jabba du Hutt.
  207.  
  208.      The eye looks from one robot to the other, there is a laugh then
  209.      the eye zips back into the door. The hatch slams shut. Artoo
  210.      beeps his concern.
  211.  
  212.                               THREEPIO
  213.                I don't think they're going to let us in,
  214.                Artoo. We'd better go.
  215.  
  216.      Artoo beeps his reluctance as Threepio turns to leave. Suddenly
  217.      the massive door starts to rise with a horrific metallic SCREECH.
  218.      The robots turn back and face an endless black cavity. The droids
  219.      look at one another, afraid to enter.
  220.  
  221.      Artoo starts forward into the gloom. Threepio rushes after his
  222.      stubby companion. The door lowers noisily behind them.
  223.  
  224.                               THREEPIO
  225.                Artoo, wait. Oh, dear! Artoo. Artoo, I really
  226.                don't think we should rush into all this.
  227.  
  228.      Artoo continues down the corridor, with Threepio following.
  229.  
  230.                               THREEPIO
  231.                Oh, Artoo!  Artoo, wait for me!
  232.  
  233. 7    INT JABBA'S PALACE - HALLWAY                                    7
  234.  
  235.      The door slams shut with a loud crash that echoes throughout the
  236.      dark passageway. The frightened robots are met by two giant,
  237.      green GAMORREAN GUARDS, who fall in behind them. Threepio glances
  238.      quickly back at the two lumbering brutes, then back to Artoo. One
  239.      guard grunts an order. Artoo beeps nervously.
  240.  
  241.                               THREEPIO
  242.                Just you deliver Master Luke's message and
  243.                get us out of here. Oh my! Oh! Oh, no.
  244.  
  245.      Walking toward them out of the darkness is BIB FORTUNA, a
  246.      humanlike alien with long tentacles protruding from his skull.
  247.  
  248.                               BIB
  249.                Die Wanna Wanga!
  250.  
  251.                               THREEPIO
  252.                Oh, my! Die Wanna Wauaga. We -- we bring a
  253.                message to your master, Jabba the Hutt.
  254.  
  255.      Artoo lets out a series of quick beeps.
  256.  
  257.                               THREEPIO (cont)
  258.                ... and a gift.
  259.                (thinks a moment, then to Artoo)
  260.                Gift, what gift?
  261.  
  262.      Bib shakes his head negatively.
  263.  
  264.                               BIB
  265.                Nee Jabba no badda. Me chaade su goodie.
  266.  
  267.      Bib holds out his hand toward Artoo and the tiny droid backs up a
  268.      bit, letting out a protesting array of squeaks. Threepio turns to
  269.      the strange-looking alien.
  270.  
  271.                               THREEPIO
  272.                He says that our instructions are to give it
  273.                only to Jabba himself.
  274.  
  275.      Bib thinks about this for a moment.
  276.  
  277.                               THREEPIO
  278.                I'm terribly sorry. I'm afraid he's ever so
  279.                stubborn about these sort of things.
  280.  
  281.      Bib gestures for the droids to follow.
  282.  
  283.                               BIB
  284.                Nudd Chaa.
  285.  
  286.      The droids follow the tall, tentacled alien into the darkness,
  287.      trailed by the two guards.
  288.  
  289.                               THREEPIO
  290.                Artoo, I have a bad feeling about this.
  291.  
  292. 8    INT JABBA'S THRONE ROOM                                         8
  293.  
  294.      The throne room is filled with the vilest, most grotesque
  295.      CREATURES ever conceived in the universe. Artoo and Threepio seem
  296.      very small as they pause in the doorway to the dimly lit chamber.
  297.      Light shafts partially illuminate the drunken courtiers as Bib
  298.      Fortuna crosses the room to the platform upon which rests the
  299.      leader of this nauseating crowd: JABBA THE HUTT. The monarch of
  300.      the galactic underworld is a repulsive blob of bloated fat with a
  301.      maniacal grin. Chained to the horrible creature is the beautiful
  302.      alien female dancer named OOLA. At the foot of the dais sits an
  303.      obnoxious birdlike creature, SALACIOUS CRUMB. Bib whispers
  304.      something in the slobbering degenerate's ear. Jabba laughs
  305.      horribly, at the two terrified droids before him. Threepio bows
  306.      politely.
  307.  
  308.                               THREEPIO
  309.                Good morning.
  310.  
  311.                               JABBA
  312.                Bo Shuda!
  313.  
  314.      The robots jump forward to stand before the repulsive, loose-
  315.      skinned villain.
  316.  
  317.                               THREEPIO
  318.                The message, Artoo, the message.
  319.  
  320.      Artoo whistles, and a beam of light projects from his domed head,
  321.      creating a HOLOGRAM of LUKE on the floor. The image grows to over
  322.      ten feet tall, and the young Jedi towers over the space
  323.      gangsters.
  324.  
  325.                               LUKE
  326.                Greetings, Exalted One. Allow me to introduce
  327.                myself. I am Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight and
  328.                friend to Captain Solo. I know that you are
  329.                powerful, mighty Jabba, and that your anger
  330.                with Solo must be equally powerful. I seek an
  331.                audience with Your Greatness to bargain for
  332.                Solo's life. (Jabba's crowd laughs) With your
  333.                wisdom, I'm sure that we can work out an
  334.                arrangement which will be mutually beneficial
  335.                and enable us to avoid any unpleasant
  336.                confrontation. As a token of my goodwill, I
  337.                present to you a gift: these two droids.
  338.  
  339.      Threepio is startled by this announcement.
  340.  
  341.                               THREEPIO
  342.                What did he say?
  343.  
  344.                               LUKE (cont)
  345.                ... Both are hardworking and will serve you
  346.                well.
  347.  
  348.                               THREEPIO
  349.                This can't be! Artoo, you're playing the
  350.                wrong message.
  351.  
  352.      Luke's hologram disappears.
  353.  
  354.      Jabba laughs while Bib speaks to him in Huttese.
  355.  
  356.                               JABBA (in Huttese subtitled)
  357.                There will be no bargain.
  358.  
  359.                               THREEPIO
  360.                We're doomed.
  361.  
  362.                               JABBA (in Huttese subtitled)
  363.                I will not give up my favorite decoration. I
  364.                like Captain Solo where he is.
  365.  
  366.      Jabba laughs hideously and looks toward an alcove beside the
  367.      throne. Hanging high, flat against the wall, exactly as we saw
  368.      him last, is a carbonized HAN SOLO.
  369.  
  370.                               THREEPIO
  371.                Artoo, look! Captain Solo. And he's still
  372.                frozen in carbonite.
  373.  
  374. 9    INT DUNGEON CORRIDOR                                            9
  375.  
  376.      One of Jabba's Gamorrean guards marches Artoo and Threepio down a
  377.      dank, shadowy passageway lined with holding cells. The cries of
  378.      unspeakable creatures bounce off the cold stone walls.
  379.      Occasionally a repulsive arm or tentacle grabs through the bars
  380.      at the hapless droids. Artoo beeps pitifully.
  381.  
  382.                               THREEPIO
  383.                What could possibly have come over Master
  384.                Luke. Is it something I did? He never
  385.                expressed any unhappiness with my work. Oh!
  386.                Oh! Hold it! Ohh!
  387.  
  388.      A large tentacle wraps around Threepio's neck. He manages to
  389.      break free, and they move on to a door at the end of the
  390.      corridor.
  391.  
  392. 10   INT BOILER ROOM                                                10
  393.  
  394.      The door slides open, revealing a room filled with steam and
  395.      noisy machinery. The guard motions them into the boiler room,
  396.      where they are met by a tall, thin humanlike robot named EV-9D9
  397.      (EVE-NINEDENINE). Behind the robot can be seen a torture rack
  398.      pulling the legs off a screaming baby work droid. A second
  399.      power droid is upside down.  As smoking branding irons are
  400.      pressed into his feet, the stubby robot lets out an agonized
  401.      electronic scream. Artoo and Threepio cringe as the guard grunts
  402.      to EV-9D9.
  403.  
  404.                               NINEDENINE
  405.                Ah, good. New acquisitions. You are a
  406.                protocol droid, are you not?
  407.  
  408.                               THREEPIO
  409.                I am See-Threepio, human-cy...
  410.  
  411.                               NINEDENINE
  412.                Yes or no will do.
  413.  
  414.                               THREEPIO
  415.                Oh. Well, yes.
  416.  
  417.                               NINEDENINE
  418.                How many languages do you speak?
  419.  
  420.                               THREEPIO
  421.                I am fluent in over six million forms of
  422.                communication, and can readily...
  423.  
  424.                               NINEDENINE
  425.                Splendid! We have been without an interpreter
  426.                since our master got angry with our last
  427.                protocol droid and disintegrated him.
  428.  
  429.                               THREEPIO
  430.                Disintegrated?
  431.  
  432.                               NINEDENINE (to a Gamorrean guard)
  433.                Guard! This protocol droid might be useful.
  434.                Fit him with a restraining bolt and take him
  435.                back to His Excellency's main audience
  436.                chamber.
  437.  
  438.      The guard shoves Threepio toward the door.
  439.  
  440.                               THREEPIO (disappearing)
  441.                Artoo, don't leave me! Ohhh!
  442.  
  443.      Artoo lets out a plaintive cry as the door closes. Then he beeps
  444.      angrily.
  445.  
  446.                               NINEDENINE
  447.                You're a feisty little one, but you'll soon
  448.                learn some respect. I have need for you on
  449.                the master's Sail Barge. And I think you'll
  450.                fit in nicely.
  451.  
  452.      The poor work droid in the background lets out another tortured
  453.      electronic scream.
  454.  
  455. 11   INT JABBA'S THRONE ROOM                                        11
  456.  
  457.      The court of Jabba the Hutt is in the midst of a drunken, raucous
  458.      party. Sloppy, smelly monsters cheer and make rude noises as Oola
  459.      and a fat female dancer perform in front of Jabba's throne.
  460.  
  461.      Jabba leers at the dancers and with a lustful gleam in his eye
  462.      beckons Oola to come and sit with him. She stops dancing and
  463.      backs away, shaking her head. Jabba gets angry and points to a
  464.      spot next to him.
  465.  
  466.                               JABBA
  467.                Da Eitha!
  468.  
  469.      The lovely alien shakes her head again and screams.
  470.  
  471.                               OOLA
  472.                Na Chuba negatorie Na! Na! Natoota...
  473.  
  474.      Jabba is furious and pulls her toward him, tugging on the chain.
  475.  
  476.                               JABBA
  477.                Boscka!
  478.  
  479.      He pushes a button and, before the dancer can flee, a trap door
  480.      in the floor springs open and swallows her up. As the door snaps
  481.      shut, a muffled growl is followed by a hideous scream. Jabba and
  482.      his monstrous friends laugh hysterically and several revelers
  483.      hurry over to watch her fate through a grate.
  484.  
  485.      Threepio cringes and glances wistfully at the carbonite form of
  486.      Han Solo, but is immediately distracted by a gunshot offscreen.
  487.      An unnatural quiet sweeps the boisterous gathering. On the far
  488.      side of the room, the crush of debauchers moves aside to allow
  489.      the approach of two guards followed by BOUSHH, an oddly cloaked
  490.      bounty hunter, leading his captive, Han Solo's copilot, CHEWBACCA
  491.      THE WOOKIEE.
  492.  
  493.      Bib takes his place next to his disgusting master, and whispers
  494.      into his ear, pointing at Chewbacca and the bounty hunter. Jabba
  495.      listens intently, then the bounty hunter bows before the gangster
  496.      and speaks a greeting in a strange, electronically processed
  497.      tongue (Ubese).
  498.  
  499.                               BOUSHH (in Ubese subtitled)
  500.                I have come for the bounty on this Wookiee.
  501.  
  502.                               THREEPIO
  503.                Oh, no! Chewbacca!
  504.  
  505.                               JABBA (in Huttese subtitled)
  506.                At last we have the mighty Chewbacca.
  507.  
  508.      Jabba lets out a loud, long, blood-curdling laugh and turns to
  509.      Threepio, waving him closer. The reluctant droid obeys.
  510.  
  511.                               THREEPIO
  512.                Oh, uh, yes, uh, I am here, Your
  513.                Worshipfulness. Uh... yes!
  514.  
  515.      Jabba continues speaking, as Threepio nervously translates.
  516.      Boushh listens, studying the dangerous creatures around the room.
  517.      He notices BOBA FETT standing near the door.
  518.  
  519.                               THREEPIO
  520.                Oh. The illustrious Jabba bids you welcome
  521.                and will gladly pay you the reward of twenty-
  522.                five thousand.
  523.  
  524.                               BOUSHH (in Ubese subtitled)
  525.                I want fifty thousand. No less.
  526.  
  527.      Jabba immediately flies into a rage, knocking the golden droid
  528.      off the raised throne into a clattering heap on the floor. Boushh
  529.      adjusts his weapon as Jabba raves in Huttese and Threepio
  530.      struggles back onto the throne. The disheveled droid tries to
  531.      compose himself.
  532.  
  533.                               THREEPIO
  534.                Uh, oh... but what, what did I say?
  535.                (to Boushh)
  536.                Uh, the mighty Jabba asks why he must pay
  537.                fifty thousand.
  538.  
  539.      The bounty hunter holds up a small silver ball in his hand.
  540.      Threepio looks at it, then looks at Jabba, then back to the
  541.      bounty hunter. The droid is very nervous and Jabba is getting
  542.      very impatient.
  543.  
  544.                               THREEPIO
  545.                Because he's holding a thermal detonator.
  546.  
  547.      The guards instantly back away, as do most of the other monsters
  548.      in the room. Jabba stares at the silver ball, which begins to
  549.      glow in the bounty hunter's hand. The room has fallen into a
  550.      tense hush. Jabba stares at the bounty hunter malevolently until
  551.      a sly grin creeps across his vast mouth and he begins to laugh.
  552.  
  553.                               JABBA (in Huttese subtitled)
  554.                This bounty hunter is my kind of scum.
  555.                Fearless and inventive.
  556.  
  557.      Jabba continues.
  558.  
  559.                               THREEPIO
  560.                Jabba offers the sum of thirty-five. And I
  561.                suggest you take it.
  562.  
  563.      Bib and the other monsters study the bounty hunter and wait for
  564.      his reaction. Boushh releases a switch on the thermal detonator
  565.      and it goes dead.
  566.  
  567.                               BOUSHH
  568.                Zeebuss.
  569.  
  570.                               THREEPIO
  571.                He agrees!
  572.  
  573.      The raucous crowd of monsters erupts in a symphony of cheers and
  574.      applause as the party returns to its full noisy pitch. Chewbacca
  575.      growls. As he is led away we spot LANDO CALRISSIAN, disguised as
  576.      a skiff guard in a partial face mask. The band starts up and
  577.      dancing girls take the center of the floor, to the hoots of the
  578.      loudly appreciative creatures.
  579.  
  580.      Boushh leans against a column with gunfighter cool and surveys
  581.      the scene, his gaze stopping only when it connects with a glare
  582.      from across the room. Boba Fett is watching him. Boushh shifts
  583.      slightly, cradling his weapon lovingly. Boba Fett shifts with
  584.      equally ominous arrogance.
  585.  
  586. 12   INT DUNGEON CORRIDOR AND CELL                                  12
  587.  
  588.      Gamorrean guards lead Chewie down the same hallway we saw before.
  589.      When a tentacle reaches out at the Wookiee, Chewie's ferocious
  590.      ROAR echoes against the walls and the tentacle snaps back into
  591.      its cell in terror. It takes all the guards to hurl Chewie
  592.      roughly into a cell, slamming the door behind him. Chewie lets
  593.      out a pathetic howl and bangs on the iron door.
  594.  
  595. 13   EXT JABBA'S PALACE                                             13
  596.  
  597.      The palace is sitting in the light of the double sunset. On the
  598.      road in front, a large toadlike creature flicks its tongue out
  599.      for a desert rodent and burps in satisfaction.
  600.  
  601. 14   INT JABBA'S THRONE ROOM - NIGHT                                14
  602.  
  603.      Silence. The room is deserted, only the awful debris of the alien
  604.      celebration giving mute witness to the activity here before.
  605.      Several drunk creatures lie unconscious around the room, snoring
  606.      loudly.
  607.  
  608.      A shadowy figure moves stealthily among the columns at the
  609.      perimeter of the room and is revealed to be Boushh, the bounty
  610.      hunter. He picks his way carefully through the snoring, drunken
  611.      monsters.
  612.  
  613.      Han Solo, the frozen space pirate, hangs spotlighted on the wall,
  614.      his coffin-like case suspended by a force field. The bounty
  615.      hunter deactivates the force field by flipping a control switch
  616.      to one side of the coffin. The heavy case slowly lowers to the
  617.      floor of the alcove.
  618.  
  619.      Boushh steps up to the case, studying Han, then turns to the
  620.      controls on the side of the coffin. He activates a series of
  621.      switches and, after one last, hesitant look at Han, slides the
  622.      decarbonization lever. The case begins to emit a sound as the
  623.      hard shell covering the contours of Han's face begins to melt
  624.      away. The bounty hunter watches as Han's body is freed of its
  625.      metallic coat and his forearms and hands, previously raised in
  626.      reflexive protest, drop slackly to his side. His face muscles
  627.      relax from their mask of horror. He appears quite dead.
  628.  
  629.      Boushh's ugly helmet leans close to Han's face listening for the
  630.      breath of life. Nothing. He waits. Han's eyes pop open with a
  631.      start and he begins coughing. The bounty hunter steadies the
  632.      staggering newborn.

  638.      Han touches his face with his hand and moans.

  659.      revealing the beautiful face of PRINCESS LEIA.

  670.      As Leia helps her weakened lover to stand up, the relative quiet
  671.      is pierced by an obscene HUTTESE CACKLE from the other side of
  672.      the alcove.

  675.                What's that? I know that laugh.

  677.      The curtain on the far side of the alcove opens, revealing Jabba
  678.      the Hutt, surrounded by Bib and other aliens. He laughs again,
  679.      and his gross cronies join in a cacophony of alien glee.

  682.                Hey, Jabba. Look, Jabba, I was just on my way
  683.                to pay you back, but I got a little
  684.                sidetracked. It's not my fault.
  685.  
  686.      Jabba laughs.

  706.      to lead Leia away.

  711.      Jabba chuckles as Lando and a second guard drag the beautiful
  712.      young princess toward him. Threepio peeks from behind a monster

  733.      The heavy metal door of the dungeon whines and slowly creaks
  734.      open. A guard throws the blinded star captain into the dark cell
  735.      and the door slams shut behind him, leaving only a thin sliver of
  736.      light from a crack in the door. Han is trying to collect himself
  737.      when suddenly a growl is heard from the far side of the cell. He
  738.      jumps back against the cell door and listens.
  739.  
  740.                               HAN
  741.                Chewie? Chewie, is that you?
  742.  
  743.      The shadowy figure lets out a crazy yell and races toward Han,
  744.      lifting him off the ground with a big hug that carries them into
  745.      the light, revealing Chewie.
  746.  
  747.                               HAN
  748.                Ah! Chew--Chewie!
  749.  
  750.      The giant Wookiee barks with glee.
  751.  
  752.                               HAN
  753.                Wait. I can't see, pal. What's goin' on?
  754.  
  755.      Chewie barks an excited blue streak.
  756.  
  757.                               HAN
  758.                Luke? Luke's crazy. He can't even take care
  759.                of himself, much less rescue anybody.

  761.      Chewie barks a reply.
  762.  
  763.                               HAN
  764.                A...Jedi Knight? I--I'm out of it for a
  765.                little while, everybody gets delusions of
  766.                grandeur.
  767.  
  768.      Chewie growls insistently. He holds Han to his chest and pets his
  769.      head.

  774. 16   INT MAIN GATE AND HALL - JABBA'S PALACE                        16

  776.      Noisily, the main gate lifts to flood the blackness with blinding
  777.      LIGHT and reveal the silhouetted figure of LUKE SKYWALKER. He is
  778.      clad in a robe similar to Ben's and wears neither pistol nor
  779.      laser sword. Luke strides purposefully into the hallway. Two
  780.      giant guards move to block Luke's path. Luke halts.
  781.  
  782.      Luke raises his hand and points at the puzzled guards, who
  783.      immediately lower their spears and fall back. The young Jedi
  784.      lowers his hand and moves on down the hallway.
  785.  
  786.      Bib Fortuna appears out of the gloom. He speaks to Luke as they
  787.      approach each other, but Luke doesn't stop and Bib must reverse
  788.      his direction and hurry alongside the young Jedi in order to carry
  789.      on the conversation. Several other guards fall in behind them in
  790.      the darkness.
  791.  
  792.                               LUKE
  793.                I must speak with Jabba.
  794.  
  795.      Bib answers in Huttese, shaking his head in denial. Luke stops
  796.      and stares at Bib; he raises his hand slightly.
  797.  
  798.                               LUKE
  799.                You will take me to Jabba now!
  800.  
  801.      Bib turns in hypnotic response to Luke's command, and Luke
  802.      follows him into the gloom.
  803.  
  804.                               LUKE
  805.                You serve your master well.
  806.  
  807.      Bib responds.

  809.                               LUKE
  810.                And you will be rewarded.

  814.      Jabba is asleep on his throne, with Leia lying in front of him.
  815.      Salacious sits by Jabba's tail, watching it wriggle. Leia is now
  816.      dressed in the skimpy costume of a dancing girl; a chain runs
  817.      from a manacle/necklace at her throat to her new master, Jabba
  818.      the Hutt. Threepio stands behind Jabba as Bib comes up to the
  819.      gangster slug.

  822.                At last! Master Luke's come to rescue me.

  827.      Jabba awakens with a start and Bib continues, in Huttese.

  862.      Jabba's laugh is mean and loud. Threepio attempts to warn Luke
  863.      about the pit.

  866.                Master Luke, you're standing on...

  869.                There will be no bargain, young Jedi. I shall
  870.                enjoy watching you die.
  871.  
  872.      Luke reaches out, and a pistol jumps out of a guard's holster and
  873.      flies into Luke's hand. The bewildered guard grabs for it as
  874.      Jabba raises his hand.
  875.  
  876.                               JABBA
  877.                Bascka!
  878.  
  879.      The floor suddenly drops away, sending Luke and the hapless guard
  880.      into the pit. The pistol goes off, blasting a hole in the
  881.      ceiling. Jabba laughs and his courtiers join in. Leia starts
  882.      forward but is restrained by a human guard-- Lando, recognizable
  883.      behind his mask. She looks at him and he shakes his head "no."
  884.  
  885. 18   INT RANCOR PIT                                                 18
  886.  
  887.      Luke and the guard have dropped twenty-five feet from a chute
  888.      into the dungeonlike cage. Luke gets to his feet as the guard
  889.      yells hysterically for help. A crowd gathers up around the edge
  890.      of the pit as the door in the side of the pit starts to RUMBLE
  891.      open. The guard screams in panic. Luke looks calmly around for a
  892.      means of escape.
  893.  
  894.                               THREEPIO
  895.                Oh, no! The Rancor!
  896.  
  897.      At the side of the pit, an iron door rumbles upward and a giant,
  898.      fanged RANCOR emerges. The guard runs to the side of the pit and
  899.      tries futilely to scramble to the top. The hideous beast closes
  900.      in on him.
  901.  
  902.      The Rancor moves past Luke, and as the guard continues to
  903.      scramble, the Rancor picks him up and pops him into its slavering
  904.      jaws. A few screams, and the guard is swallowed with a gulp. The
  905.      audience cheers and laughs at the guard's fate.
  906.  
  907.      The monster turns and starts for Luke. The young Jedi dashes away
  908.      just ahead of the monster's swipe at him, and picks up the long
  909.      arm bone of an earlier victim. The monster grabs Luke and brings
  910.      him up to his salivating mouth. At the last moment, Luke wedges
  911.      the bone in the monster's mouth and is dropped to the floor. The
  912.      monster bellows in rage and flails about, hitting the side of the
  913.      pit, causing an avalanche.
  914.  
  915.      The monster crushes the bone in its jaws and sees Luke, who
  916.      squeezes into a crevice in the pit wall. Luke looks past the
  917.      monster to the holding cave beyond. On the far side of the
  918.      holding cave is a utility door--if only he can get to it. The
  919.      Rancor spots Luke and reaches into the crevice for him. Luke
  920.      grabs a large rock and raises it, smashing it down on the
  921.      Rancor's finger.
  922.  
  923. 19   HOLDING TUNNEL - RANCOR PIT                                    19
  924.  
  925.      The Rancor lets out a loud howl as Luke makes a run for the
  926.      holding cave. He reaches the door and pushes a button to open it.
  927.      When he succeeds, he sees a heavy barred gate between him and
  928.      safety. Beyond the gate two guards look up from their dinner.
  929.      Luke turns to see the monster heading for him, and pulls with all
  930.      his might on the gate. The guards move to the gate and start
  931.      poking at the young Jedi with spears, laughing.
  932.  
  933.      Luke crouches (against the wall) as the monster starts to reach
  934.      for him. Suddenly he notices a main door control panel halfway up
  935.      the wall. As the Rancor moves in for the kill, Luke picks up a
  936.      skull from the cave floor and hurls it at the panel. The giant
  937.      overhead door comes crashing down on the beast's head, squashing
  938.      it like a sledgehammer on an egg.
  939.  
  940.      A startled gasp is heard from the stunned court. There's
  941.      consternation at this turn of events. Heads look to Jabba, who is
  942.      actually turning red with anger. Leia cannot suppress her joy.
  943.      Jabba utters harsh commands to his guards and they hurry off.
  944.

  946.                Bring me Solo and the Wookiee. They will all
  947.                suffer for this outrage.

  951.      The Rancor KEEPERS have come into the cage and are examining
  952.      their dead beast. One of them breaks down and weeps. The other
  953.      glares menacingly at Luke, who is unworried. Several guards rush
  954.      into the holding tunnel and take Luke away.

  957.  
  958.      The crowd of creepy courtiers parts as Han and Chewie are brought
  959.      into the throne room, and other guards drag Luke up the steps.

  991.      Leia like a pet cat. Several of the guards, including Lando,
  992.      bring Luke from the other side of the room. Boba is standing
  993.      behind Jabba.

  995.      Threepio steps forward and translates for the captives.
  996.  
  997.                               THREEPIO
  998.                Oh, dear. His High Exaltedness, the great
  999.                Jabba the Hutt, has decreed that you are to
  1000.                be terminated immediately.
  1001.  
  1002.                               HAN
  1003.                Good, I hate long waits.
  1004.  
  1005.                               THREEPIO
  1006.                You will therefore be taken to the Dune Sea
  1007.                and cast into the pit of Carkoon, the nesting
  1008.                place of the all-powerful Sarlacc.
  1009.  
  1010.                               HAN (to Luke)
  1011.                Doesn't sound so bad.
  1012.  
  1013.                               THREEPIO
  1014.                In his belly, you will find a new definition
  1015.                of pain and suffering, as you are slowly
  1016.                digested over a thousand years.
  1017.  
  1018.                               HAN
  1019.                On second thought, let's pass on that, huh?
  1020.  
  1021.      Chewie barks his agreement.
  1022.  
  1023.                               LUKE
  1024.                You should have bargained, Jabba. That's the
  1025.                last mistake you'll ever make.
  1026.  
  1027.      Jabba cackles evilly at this.
  1028.  
  1029.      As the guards drag the prisoners from the throne room, a loud
  1030.      cheer rises from the crowd. Leia and Chewie exchange concerned
  1031.      looks, but Luke Skywalker, Jedi warrior, cannot suppress a smile.
  1032.  
  1033. 23   EXT TATOOINE SEA - SKIFF                                       23
  1034.  
  1035.      Jabba's huge SAIL BARGE moves above the desert surface
  1036.      accompanied by two smaller SKIFFS. One of the skiffs glides
  1037.      close, revealing Luke, Han, and Chewie -- all in bonds --
  1038.      surrounded by guards, one of whom is Lando in disguise.
  1039.  
  1040.                               HAN
  1041.                I think my eyes are getting better. Instead
  1042.                of a big dark blur, I see a big light blur.
  1043.  
  1044.                               LUKE
  1045.                There's nothing to see. I used to live here,
  1046.                you know.
  1047.

  1049.                You're gonna die here, you know. Convenient.

  1051.                               LUKE
  1052.                Just stick close to Chewie and Lando. I've
  1053.                taken care of everything.

  1060.      Jabba the Hutt rides like a sultan in the massive antigravity
  1061.      ship. His entire retinue is with him, drinking, eating, and
  1062.      having a good time. Leia is watching her friends in the skiff
  1063.      when the chain attached to her neck is pulled tight and Jabba
  1064.      tugs the scantily clad princess to him.
  1065.

  1067.                Soon you will learn to appreciate me.
  1068.  
  1069.      Threepio wanders among the Sail Barge aliens, bumping into a
  1070.      smaller droid serving drinks, spilling them all over the place.
  1071.      The stubby droid lets out an angry series of beeps and whistles.
  1072.  
  1073.                               THREEPIO
  1074.                Oh, I'm terribly sor... Artoo! What are you
  1075.                doing here?
  1076.  
  1077.      Artoo beeps a quick reply.
  1078.  
  1079.                               THREEPIO
  1080.                Well, I can see you're serving drinks, but
  1081.                this place is dangerous. They're going to
  1082.                execute Master Luke and, if we're not
  1083.                careful, us too!
  1084.  
  1085.               Artoo whistles a singsong response.
  1086.  
  1087.                               THREEPIO
  1088.                Hmm.  I wish I had your confidence.
  1089.  
  1090. 25   EXT SARLACC PIT                                                25
  1091.  
  1092.      The convoy moves up over a huge sand pit. The Sail Barge stops to
  1093.      one side of the depression, as does the escort skiff. But the
  1094.      prisoner's skiff moves out directly over the center and hovers.
  1095.      At the bottom of the deep cone of sand is a repulsive, mucous-
  1096.      lined hole, surrounded by thousands of needle-sharp teeth. This
  1097.      is the SARLACC. A plank is extended from the edge of the
  1098.      prisoner's skiff. Guards release Luke's bonds and shove him out
  1099.      onto the plank above the Sarlacc's mouth.
  1100.  
  1101. 26   EXT SAIL BARGE OBSERVATION DECK                                26
  1102.  
  1103.      Jabba and Leia are now by the rail, watching. Threepio leans
  1104.      forward and the slobbering villain mumbles something to him. As
  1105.      Threepio steps up to a comlink, Jabba raises his arm and the
  1106.      motley array of intergalactic pirates fall silent. Threepio's
  1107.      voice is amplified across loudspeakers.
  1108.  
  1109.                               THREEPIO
  1110.                Victims of the almighty Sarlacc: His
  1111.                Excellency hopes that you will die honorably.
  1112.                But should any of you wish to beg for mercy,
  1113.                the great Jabba the Hutt will now listen to
  1114.                your pleas.
  1115.  
  1116. 27   EXT SKIFF                                                      27
  1117.  
  1118.      Han steps forward arrogantly and begins to speak.
  1119.  
  1120.                               HAN
  1121.                Threepio, you tell that slimy piece of...
  1122.                worm-ridden filth he'll get no such pleasure
  1123.                from us. Right?
  1124.  
  1125.      Chewie growls his agreement.
  1126.  
  1127.                               LUKE
  1128.                Jabba! This is your last chance. Free us or
  1129.                die.
  1130.  
  1131.      Lando moves unobtrusively along the skiff as Luke shoots a quick
  1132.      look of conspiracy to him.
  1133.  
  1134. 28   INT SAIL BARGE OBSERVATION DECK                                28
  1135.  
  1136.      The assembled monsters rock with mocking laughter as Artoo zips
  1137.      unnoticed up the ramp to the upper deck. Jabba's laughter
  1138.      subsides as he speaks into the comlink.
  1139.

  1141.                Move him into position.
  1142.  
  1143.      Jabba makes a thumbs-down gesture. Leia looks worried.

  1145. 29   EXT BARGE - UPPER DECK                                         29

  1147.      Artoo appears from below and zips over to the rail facing the
  1148.      pit. Below, in the skiff, Luke is prodded by a guard to the edge
  1149.      of the plank over the gaping Sarlacc. Luke looks up at Artoo,
  1150.      then gives a jaunty salute: the signal the little droid has been
  1151.      waiting for. A flap opens in Artoo's domed head.
  1152.  
  1153.                               JABBA (in Huttese subtitled)
  1154.                Put him in.
  1155.  
  1156. 30   EXT SKIFF - PLANK                                              30
  1157.  
  1158.      Luke is prodded and jumps off the plank to the cheers of the
  1159.      bloodthirsty spectators. But, before anyone can even perceive
  1160.      what is happening, he spins around and grabs the end of the plank
  1161.      by his fingertips. The plank bends wildly from his weight and
  1162.      catapults him skyward. In midair he does a complete flip and
  1163.      drops down on the end of the plank in the same spot he just
  1164.      vacated, but facing the skiff. He casually extends an open palm
  1165.      and -- his lightsaber, which Artoo has sent arcing toward him,
  1166.      drops into his hand.
  1167.  
  1168.      With samurai speed, Luke ignites it and attacks the guard who
  1169.      prodded him off the plank, sending the hapless monster screaming
  1170.      overboard. The other guards swarm toward Luke. He wades into
  1171.      them, lightsaber flashing. Lando struggles with another guard at
  1172.      the back of the skiff.
  1173.  
  1174. 31   EXT SARLACC PIT                                                31
  1175.  
  1176.      A bewildered guard lands in the soft, sandy slope of the pit, and
  1177.      begins sliding. He claws desperately as a Sarlacc tentacle grabs
  1178.      him and pulls him screaming into the viscous mouth.
  1179.  
  1180. 32   INT SAIL BARGE                                                 32
  1181.  
  1182.      Jabba watches this and explodes in rage. He barks commands, and
  1183.      the guards around him rush off to do his bidding. The scuzzy
  1184.      creatures watching the action from the window are in an uproar.
  1185.  
  1186. 33   EXT SKIFF                                                      33
  1187.  
  1188.      Luke knocks another guard off the skiff and into the waiting
  1189.      mouth of the Sarlacc. He starts to untie Chewie's bonds.
  1190.  
  1191.                               LUKE
  1192.                Easy, Chewie.
  1193.  
  1194.      At that moment, the deck gunmen on the barge unleash a series of
  1195.      blasts from a big cannon on the upper deck. Lando is tossed from
  1196.      the deck of the rocking skiff. He manages to grab a rope, and
  1197.      dangles desperately above the Sarlacc pit.
  1198.  
  1199.                               LANDO
  1200.                Whoa! Whoa! Help!
  1201.  
  1202. 34   EXT UPPER DECK - SAIL BARGE                                    34
  1203.  
  1204.      With two swift strides, the dangerous Boba Fett ignites his
  1205.      rocket pack, leaps into the air, and flies from the barge down to
  1206.      the skiff.
  1207.  
  1208. 35   EXT SKIFF                                                      35
  1209.  
  1210.      Boba lands on the skiff and starts to aim his laser gun at Luke,
  1211.      who has freed Han and Chewie from their bonds. But before Boba
  1212.      can fire, the young Jedi spins on him, lightsaber sweeping, and
  1213.      hacks the bounty hunter's gun in half.
  1214.  
  1215.      Immediately, the skiff takes another direct hit from the barge's
  1216.      deck gun. Shards of skiff deck fly. Chewie and Han are thrown
  1217.      against the rail.
  1218.  
  1219.                               HAN
  1220.                Chewie, you okay? Where is he?
  1221.  
  1222.      The Wookiee is wounded and he howls in pain.
  1223.  
  1224.                               HAN
  1225.                I'm okay, pal.
  1226.  
  1227.      For a moment, Luke is distracted, and in that moment, Boba fires
  1228.      a cable out of his armored sleeve. Instantly, Luke is wrapped in
  1229.      a strong cable, his arms pinned against his side, his sword arm
  1230.      free only from the wrist down.  Luke bends his wrist so the lightsaber
  1231.      points straight up to reach the wire lasso and cuts through. Luke
  1232.      shrugs away the cable and stands free.
  1233.  
  1234.      Another blast from the Barge's deck gun hits near Boba and he is
  1235.      knocked unconscious to the deck, next to where Lando is hanging.
  1236.  
  1237.                               LANDO
  1238.                Han! Chewie?
  1239.  
  1240.                               HAN
  1241.                Lando!
  1242.  
  1243.      Luke is a little shaken but remains standing as a fusillade
  1244.      brackets him. The second skiff, loaded with guards firing their
  1245.      weapons, moves in on Luke fast. Luke leaps toward the incoming
  1246.      second skiff. The young Jedi leaps into the middle of the second
  1247.      skiff and begins decimating the guards from their midst.
  1248.  
  1249.      Chewie, wounded, tries to lift himself as he barks directions to
  1250.      Han, guiding him toward a spear which has been dropped by one of
  1251.      the guards. Han searches the deck as Chewie barks directions;
  1252.      finally he grabs hold of the spear.
  1253.  
  1254.      Boba Fett, badly shaken, rises from the deck. He looks over at
  1255.      the other skiff, where Luke is whipping a mass of guards. Boba
  1256.      raises his arm, and aims his lethal appendage.
  1257.  
  1258.      Chewie barks desperately at Han.
  1259.  
  1260.                               HAN
  1261.                Boba Fett?! Boba Fett?! Where?
  1262.  
  1263.      The space pirate turns around blindly, and the long spear in his
  1264.      hand whacks squarely in the middle of Boba's rocket pack.
  1265.  
  1266.      The impact of the swing causes the rocket pack to ignite. Boba
  1267.      blasts off, flying over the second skiff like a missile, smashing
  1268.      against the side of the huge Sail Barge and sliding away into the
  1269.      pit. He screams as his armored body makes its last flight past
  1270.      Lando and directly into the mucous mouth of the Sarlacc. The
  1271.      Sarlacc burps. Chewie growls a weak congratulations to Han.
  1272.

  1275.      Leia turns from the spectacle outside, leaps onto Jabba's throne,
  1276.      and throws the chain that enslaves her over his head around his
  1277.      bulbous neck. Then she dives off the other side of the throne,
  1278.      pulling the chain violently in her grasp. Jabba's flaccid neck
  1279.      contracts beneath the tightening chain. His huge eyes bulge from
  1280.      their sockets and his scum-coated tongue flops out. The Exalted
  1281.      Hutt's huge tail spasms through its death throes and then slams
  1282.      down into final stillness. Leia struggles to free herself of her
  1283.      bondage.

  1287.      Luke continues to destroy the aliens on the guards' skiff, as Han
  1288.      extends his spear downward to Lando, who is still dangling
  1289.      precariously from a rope on the prisoner's skiff.

  1292.                Lando, grab it!
  1293.  
  1294.                               LANDO
  1295.                Lower it!
  1296.

  1298.                I'm trying!

  1300.      A major hit from the barge deck gun knocks the skiff on its side.
  1301.      Han and almost everything else on board slides overboard. The
  1302.      rope breaks, and Lando falls to the side of the Sarlacc pit.
  1303.      Luckily, Han's foot catches on the skiff railing and he dangles
  1304.      above Lando and the pit. The wounded Wookiee holds onto the skiff
  1305.      for dear life as another hit from the deck gun rocks the skiff
  1306.      violently.
  1307.  
  1308.                               HAN
  1309.                Whoa! Whoa! Grab me, Chewie! I'm slipping.
  1310.  
  1311.      Chewie grabs hold of Han's feet, holding him upside down, as Han
  1312.      extends the spear toward Lando, who is clutching to the side of
  1313.      the pit.
  1314.  
  1315.                               HAN
  1316.                Grab it! L--Lando. Grab!
  1317.  
  1318.      Luke finishes off the last guard on the second skiff. He sees the
  1319.      deck gun blasting away at his helpless companions. Luke leaps
  1320.      from the skiff, across a chasm of air, to the sheer metallic side
  1321.      of the Sail Barge. Barely able to get a fingerhold, he begins a
  1322.      painful climb up the hull, when suddenly an ax smashes through a
  1323.      window an inch from his head. With Jedi agility, Luke grasps the
  1324.      wrist holding the ax and yanks the helpless guard through the broken
  1325.      window and into the deadly pit.
  1326.  
  1327.      The injured Chewie is reaching over the rail for the dangling
  1328.      Han, who is in turn blindly reaching down toward the desperate
  1329.      Lando. The Baron has stopped his slippage down the sandy slope of
  1330.      the Sarlacc pit by lying very still. Every time he tries to reach
  1331.      for Han, the loose sand moves him closer to his final reward.
  1332.  
  1333.                               HAN
  1334.                Grab it! Almost... You almost got it!
  1335.  
  1336.      Another blast hits the front of the tilted skiff, causing Lando
  1337.      to let go of the spear.
  1338.  
  1339.                               LANDO
  1340.                Hold it! Whoa!
  1341.  
  1342.      Again Han extends the spear toward Lando.
  1343.  
  1344.                               HAN
  1345.                Gently now. All... all right. Now easy, easy.
  1346.                Hold me, Chewie.
  1347.  
  1348.      Lando screams. One of the Sarlacc's tentacles has wrapped tightly
  1349.      around his ankle, dragging him down the side of the pit.
  1350.  
  1351.                               HAN
  1352.                Chewie! Chewie, give me the gun. Don't move,
  1353.                Lando.
  1354.  
  1355.                               LANDO
  1356.                No, wait! I thought you were blind!
  1357.  
  1358.                               HAN
  1359.                It's all right. Trust me. Don't move.

  1361.                               LANDO
  1362.                All right! A little higher! Just a little
  1363.                higher!
  1364.  
  1365.      Han adjusts his aim as Lando lowers his head, and the fuzzy-eyed
  1366.      pirate fires at the tentacle. Direct hit. The tentacle releases
  1367.      Lando, and Chewie starts to pull them on board the skiff.
  1368.

  1370.                Chewie, Pull us up! Come on! Okay... up,
  1371.                Chewie, up!

  1375.      The deck gunners have Chewie and the desperate dangling human
  1376.      chain in their gun sights when something up on deck commands
  1377.      their attention: Luke, standing before them like a pirate king,
  1378.      ignites his lightsaber. The deck gunners have barely reached for
  1379.      their pistols before the young Jedi has demolished them.
  1380.      Immediately, Luke turns to see two more gunners (who have been
  1381.      uncovering a giant gun at the end of the barge) racing for him,
  1382.      firing their laser pistols.

  1386.      Leia is struggling against her chains in desperation as Artoo
  1387.      zips through the tumult of confused monsters to the rescue; the
  1388.      stubby little droid extends a small laser gun and blasts the
  1389.      chain apart.
  1390.

  1392.                Come on. We gotta get out of here quick.
  1393.  
  1394.      Artoo and Leia race for the exit, passing Threepio, who is
  1395.      kicking and screaming as Salacious Crumb, the reptilian monkey-
  1396.      monster picks out one of the golden droid's eyes.
  1397.  
  1398.                               THREEPIO
  1399.                Not my eyes! Artoo, help! Quickly, Artoo. Oh!
  1400.                Ohhh! You beast!
  1401.  
  1402.      Artoo zips over and zaps Salacious, sending him skyward with a
  1403.      scream, crashing into the rafters as Artoo, Leia, and Threepio
  1404.      (with his eye dangling from a wire) hurry off.

  1408.      Luke is warding off laser blasts with his lightsaber, surrounded
  1409.      by guards and fighting like a demon. Leia emerges onto the deck
  1410.      as Luke turns to face another guard.

  1413.                Get the gun! Point it at the deck!
  1414.  
  1415.      Leia turns toward the barge cannon, climbs on the platform, and
  1416.      swivels the gun around.
  1417.

  1421.      A laser blast hits Luke's mechanical hand and he bends over in
  1422.      pain, but manages to swing his lightsaber upward and take out the
  1423.      last of the guards. He looks at the wounded hand, which reveals
  1424.      the mechanism. He flexes the hand; it still works.
  1425.  
  1426.      Near the rail of the upper deck, Artoo and Threepio steady
  1427.      themselves as Threepio gets ready to jump. Artoo beeps wildly.
  1428.  
  1429.                               THREEPIO
  1430.                Artoo, where are we going? I couldn't
  1431.                possibly jump.
  1432.  
  1433.      Artoo butts the golden droid over the edge and steps off himself,
  1434.      tumbling toward the sand.
  1435.  
  1436.      Luke runs along the empty deck toward Leia and the barge gun,
  1437.      which she has brought around to point down at the deck.
  1438.  
  1439.                               LUKE
  1440.                Come on!
  1441.  
  1442.      Luke has hold on one of the rigging ropes from the mast. He
  1443.      gathers Leia in his other arm and kicks the trigger of the deck
  1444.      gun. The gun explodes into the deck as Luke and Leia swing out
  1445.      toward the skiff.

  1449.      Han leans panting against the rail as Chewie helps Lando onto the
  1450.      deck. Luke and Leia land on the skiff with flair.
  1451.

  1453.                Let's go! And don't forget the droids.

  1456.                We're on our way.
  1457.  
  1458.      The Sail Barge is exploding in stages in the distance. Half of
  1459.      the huge craft is on fire.

  1463.      Threepio's legs stick straight up from the dune where he landed.
  1464.      Next to it, Artoo's periscope is the only thing above the sand.
  1465.      The skiff floats above them and two large electromagnets dangle
  1466.      down on a wire. With a loud CLANG, both droids are pulled from
  1467.      the sand.

  1471.      The little skiff skips around the burning Sail Barge, which
  1472.      continues its chain of explosions. As the skiff sails off across
  1473.      the desert, the barge settles to the sand and disappears in one
  1474.      final conflagration.

  1478.      A ferocious sandstorm blocks our view. Then, through the ROAR, we
  1479.      HEAR THE VOICES of our heroes. They emerge slowly from the veil
  1480.      of sand, pressing on against the wind. First come Artoo and
  1481.      Threepio, followed by Leia guiding Han, then Luke and Lando come
  1482.      into view, each supporting one side of the towering Chewbacca,
  1483.      who hobbles from his wound.
  1484.  
  1485.      Soon, they can make out some large vague shapes in the blowing
  1486.      sand. It is the Millennium Falcon and, parked beside it, Luke's
  1487.      trusty X-wing and a two-seated Y-wing. They must shout to be
  1488.      heard.
  1489.  
  1490.                               HAN
  1491.                I don't know. All I can see is a lot of
  1492.                blowing sand!
  1493.  
  1494.                               LEIA
  1495.                That's all any of us can see.
  1496.  
  1497.                               HAN (blinking)
  1498.                Then I guess I'm getting better.

  1500.      As soon as the group huddles under the bulk of the Falcon, the
  1501.      wind dies down to something more describable as a severe weather
  1502.      condition. Threepio hits a switch, and the gang-plank lowers with
  1503.      a HUM.
  1504.  
  1505.                               HAN (turning to Luke)
  1506.                I've got to hand it to you, kid, you were
  1507.                pretty good out there.
  1508.  
  1509.                               LUKE (shrugging it off)
  1510.                I had a lot of help. Think nothing of it.

  1512.                               HAN
  1513.                No, I'm thinking a lot about it. That carbon
  1514.                freeze was the closest thing to dead there
  1515.                is. And it wasn't just sleepin'. It was a big
  1516.                wide awake nothing!

  1518.      Luke nods, as Chewie growls affectionately at the young Jedi
  1519.      warrior, mussing his hair like a proud uncle. And Leia warmly
  1520.      hugs him.

  1522.                               LUKE (moving to his ship)
  1523.                I'll see you back at the fleet.

  1525.                               HAN
  1526.                Why don't you leave that crate and come with
  1527.                us?

  1533.      Luke and Artoo take off in their spacecraft.

  1563.      Luke is at the controls, with Artoo attached behind him outside
  1564.      the canopy. Luke speaks into his comlink to the others, in the
  1565.      MILLENNIUM FALCON.

  1582.      of Luke. He smiles at the monitor and speaks to Artoo, as he
  1583.      pulls a black glove on to cover his wounded mechanical hand.

  1586.      That's right, Artoo. We're going to the Dagobah system. I have a
  1587.      promise to keep... to an old friend.

  1591.      A Super Star Destroyer and several ships of the Imperial Fleet
  1592.      rest in space above the half-completed Death Star and its green
  1593.      neighbor, Endor. Four squads of TIE fighters escort an Imperial
  1594.      shuttle toward the Death Star.

  1598.      Lord Vader strides down the hallway, accompanied by a very
  1599.      nervous Death Star commander.

  1603.      Thousands of Imperial troops in tight formation fill the mammoth
  1604.      docking bay. Vader and the officer walk to the landing platform,
  1605.      where the shuttle is coming to rest.

  1607.      The shuttle's ramp lowers and the Emperor's Royal Guards come out
  1608.      and create a lethal perimeter. The assembled troops move to rigid
  1609.      attention with a momentous SNAP.
  1610.  
  1611.      Then, in the huge SILENCE which follows, the EMPEROR appears. He
  1612.      is a rather small, shriveled old man. His bent frame slowly makes
  1613.      its way down the ramp with the aid of a gnarled cane. He wears a
  1614.      hooded cloak similar to the one Ben wears, except that it is
  1615.      black. The Emperor's face is shrouded and difficult to see,
  1616.      except for his piercing yellow eyes. Commander Jerjerrod and
  1617.      Darth Vader kneel to him. The Supreme Ruler of the galaxy beckons
  1618.      to the Dark Lord.
  1619.  
  1620.                               EMPEROR (to Vader)
  1621.                Rise, my friend.
  1622.  
  1623.      Vader rises and falls in next to the Emperor as he slowly makes
  1624.      his way along the rows of troops. Jerjerrod and the other
  1625.      commanders stay kneeling until the Supreme Ruler and Vader,
  1626.      followed by several Imperial dignitaries, pass by; only then do
  1627.      they join in the procession.

  1629.                               VADER
  1630.                The Death Star will be completed on schedule.
  1631.

  1633.                You have done well, Lord Vader. And now I
  1634.                sense you wish to continue your search for

  1658.      Once again, Artoo finds himself waiting around in the damp
  1659.      environs of the swamp planet, and he's none too happy about it.
  1660.      He beeps disconsolately to himself and turns to look at Yoda's
  1661.      cottage. Warm yellow light escapes the oddly shaped windows to
  1662.      fight the gloom.
  1663.

  1666.      The tip of a walking stick taps hesitantly across the earthen
  1667.      floor of the cottage. Our view travels up the stick to the small
  1668.      green hand that clutches it, and then to the familiar face of
  1669.      YODA, THE JEDI MASTER. His manner is frail, and his voice, though
  1670.      cheerful, seems weaker.
  1671.  
  1672.                               YODA
  1673.                Hmm. That face you make. Look I so old to
  1674.                young eyes?
  1675.  
  1676.      Luke is sitting in a corner of the cramped space and, indeed, his
  1677.      look has been woeful. Caught, he tries to hide it.

  1680.                No... of course not.

  1682.                               YODA (tickled, chuckles)
  1683.                I do, yes, I do!  Sick have I become. Old and
  1684.                weak. (Points a crooked finger) When nine

  1688.      Yoda chuckles at this, coughs, and hobbles over toward his bed.

  1962.                democracy.  Even so, the family continued to
  1963.                be politically powerful, and Leia, following
  1964.                in her foster father's path, became a senator
  1965.                as well.  That's not all she became, of
  1966.                course... she became the leader of her cell
  1967.                in the Alliance against the corrupt Empire.
  1968.                And because she had diplomatic immunity, she
  1969.                was a vital link for getting information to
  1970.                the Rebel cause.  That's what she was doing
  1971.                when her path crossed yours... for her foster
  1972.                parents had always told her to contact me on
  1973.                Tatooine, if her troubles became desperate.
  1974.  
  1975.      Luke is overwhelmed by the truth, and is suddenly protective of
  1976.      his sister.

  1979.                But you can't let her get involved now, Ben.

  1991.      The vast Rebel Fleet stretches as far as the eye can see.
  1992.      Overhead a dozen small Corellian battleships fly in formation.
  1993.      Fighters and battlecruisers surround the largest of the Rebel
  1994.      Star Cruisers, the HEADQUARTERS FRIGATE.

  1998.      Hundreds of Rebel commanders of all races and forms are assembled
  1999.      in the WAR ROOM. WEDGE is among them. In the center of the room
  2000.      is a holographic model depicting the half-completed Imperial
  2001.      Death Star, the nearby Moon of Endor, and the protecting
  2002.      deflector shield.
  2003.  
  2004.      MON MOTHMA, the leader of the Alliance, enters the room. She is a
  2005.      stern but beautiful woman in her fifties. Conferring with her are
  2006.      several military leaders, including GENERAL MADINE and ADMIRAL
  2007.      ACKBAR (a salmon-colored Mon Calamari). Lando moves through the
  2008.      crowd until he finds Han and Chewie, standing next to Leia and
  2009.      the two droids.
  2010.  
  2011.      Han peers at Lando's new insignia on his chest, and is amused.
  2012.  
  2013.                               HAN
  2014.                Well, look at you, a general, huh?
  2015.  
  2016.                               LANDO
  2017.                Oh, well, someone must have told them about
  2018.                my little maneuver at the battle of Taanab.

  2023.                lookin' for somebody to lead this crazy

  2034.      Mon Mothma signals for attention, and the room falls
  2035.      silent.

  2038.                The Emperor has made a critical error and the
  2039.                time for our attack has come.
  2040.  
  2041.      This causes a stir. Mon Mothma turns to a holographic model of
  2042.      the Death Star, the Endor moon and the protecting deflector
  2043.      shield in the center of the room.
  2044.  
  2045.                               MON MOTHMA
  2046.                The data brought to us by the Bothan spies
  2047.                pinpoints the exact location of the Emperor's
  2048.                new battle station. We also know that the
  2049.                weapon systems of this Death Star are not yet
  2050.                operational. With the Imperial Fleet spread
  2051.                throughout the galaxy in a vain effort to
  2052.                engage us, it is relatively unprotected. But
  2053.                most important of all, we've learned that the
  2054.                Emperor himself is personally overseeing the
  2055.                final stages of the construction of this
  2056.                Death Star.
  2057.  
  2058.      A volley of spirited chatter erupts from the crowd. Han turns to
  2059.      Leia as Chewie barks his amazement.
  2060.  
  2061.                               MON MOTHMA (cont)
  2062.                Many Bothans died to bring us this
  2063.                information. Admiral Ackbar, please.
  2064.  
  2065.      Admiral Ackbar steps forward and points to the Death Star's force
  2066.      field and the Moon of Endor.
  2067.  
  2068.                               ACKBAR
  2069.                You can see here the Death Star orbiting the
  2070.                forest Moon of Endor. Although the weapon
  2071.                systems on this Death Star are not yet
  2072.                operational, the Death Star does have a
  2073.                strong defense mechanism. It is protected by
  2074.                an energy shield, which is generated from the
  2075.                nearby forest Moon of Endor. The shield must
  2076.                be deactivated if any attack is to be
  2077.                attempted. Once the shield is down, our
  2078.                cruisers will create a perimeter, while the
  2079.                fighters fly into the superstructure and
  2080.                attempt to knock out the main reactor.

  2082.      There's a concerned murmur.

  2112.                Sounds dangerous.

  2115.                I wonder who they found to pull that off.

  2120.      Leia, startled, looks up at Han, surprise changing to admiration.

  2126.      Chewbacca raises his hairy paw and volunteers.  Han looks up at
  2127.      him.

  2133.      Chewie waves that off with a huge GROWL.

  2148.      Leia moves to Luke and embraces him warmly. She senses a change
  2149.      in him and looks into his eyes questioningly.

  2175.      docking bay. Chewie barks a final farewell to Lando and leads
  2176.      Artoo and Threepio up the shuttle, crowded now with the Rebel
  2177.      strike team loading weapons and supplies. Lando turns to face
  2178.      Han. Luke and Leia have said their good-byes and start up the
  2179.      ramp.
  2180.

  2182.                Look. I want you to take her. I mean it. Take
  2183.                her. You need all the help you can get. She's
  2184.                the fastest ship in the fleet.

  2187.                All right, old buddy. You know, I know what

  2218.                Yeah, she's comin' up.

  2220.      Chewie growls a complaint.

  2226.      Leia comes in from the hold and takes her seat near Luke.

  2228.      Chewie barks and hits some switches. Han's glance has stuck on
  2229.      something out the window: the Millennium Falcon. Leia nudges him
  2230.      gently.

  2236.                Yeah, I just got a funny feeling. Like I'm

  2262.      The stolen Imperial shuttle leaves the main docking bay of the
  2263.      Headquarters Frigate, lowers its wings into flight position, and
  2264.      zooms off into space.

  2268.      The converted control room is dimly lit, except for a pool of
  2269.      light at the far end. There the Emperor sits in an elaborate
  2270.      control chair before a large window which looks out across the
  2271.      half-completed Death Star to the giant green moon of Endor.
  2272.  
  2273.      Darth Vader, standing with other members of the Imperial council,
  2274.      cautiously approaches his master. The ruler's back is to Vader.
  2275.      After several tense moments, the Emperor's chair rotates around
  2276.      to face him.
  2277.  
  2278.                               VADER
  2279.                What is thy bidding, my Master?
  2280.  
  2281.                               EMPEROR
  2282.                Send the fleet to the far side of Endor.
  2283.                There it will stay until called for.

  2290.                It is of no concern. Soon the Rebellion will
  2291.                be crushed and young Skywalker will be one of

  2293.                out to the command ship and await my orders.

  2298.      Vader bows, then turns and exits the throne room as the Emperor
  2299.      walks toward the waiting council members.

  2303.      There is a great deal of Imperial traffic in the area as
  2304.      construction proceeds on the Death Star. Transports, TIE
  2305.      fighters, and a few Star Destroyers move about. Now the huge
  2306.      Super Star Destroyer announces itself with a low roar and soon
  2307.      fills the frame.

  2311.      Han looks back at Luke and Leia as Chewie flips several switches.

  2371.      Chewie barks his worries as the Super Star Destroyer grows larger

  2376.      Lord Vader stands, back to us, staring out a window at the Death
  2377.      Star. Now, some vibration felt only by him causes him to turn.
  2378.      After a moment of stillness, he walks down the row of controllers
  2379.      to where ADMIRAL PIETT is leaning over the tracking screen of the
  2380.      controller we've seen earlier. Piett straightens at Vader's
  2381.      approach.

  2402.      Vader looks upward, as he senses Luke's presence.

  2443.      The stolen Imperial shuttle sits in a clearing of the moon's
  2444.      dark, primeval forest, dwarfed by the ancient towering trees.

  2446.      On an adjacent hill, the helmeted Rebel contingent makes its way
  2447.      up a steep trail. Leia and Han are slightly ahead of Chewie and
  2448.      Luke. The troops of the strike-team squad follow, with Artoo and
  2449.      Threepio bringing up the rear. Artoo beeps.
  2450.  
  2451.      Up ahead, Chewie and Leia reach a crest in the hill and drop
  2452.      suddenly to the ground, signaling the rest of the group to stop.
  2453.      Han and Luke crawl up to take a look.
  2454.  
  2455.                               THREEPIO
  2456.                Oh, I told you it was dangerous here.

  2458.      THEIR POV. Not far below them, two IMPERIAL SCOUTS are wandering
  2459.      through bushes in the valley below. Their two ROCKET BIKES are
  2460.      parked nearby.

  2463.                Shall we try and go around?

  2466.                It'll take time. This whole party'll be for
  2467.                nothing if they see us.

  2469.      Leia motions for the squad to stay put, then she, Han, Luke and
  2470.      Chewie start quietly down.

  2474.      The four friends make their way to the edge of the clearing not
  2475.      far from the two Imperial scouts.

  2483.                there.

  2488.      Han and Chewie turn and start through the bushes toward the
  2489.      scouts. Luke and Leia exchange smiles.

  2491.      Han sneaks up behind one of the scouts, steps on a twig and the
  2492.      scout whirls, knocking Han into a tree. The scout shouts for his
  2493.      companion.

  2498.      The second scout jumps on his speeder bike and takes off, but
  2499.      Chewie gets off a shot on his crossbow laser weapon, causing the
  2500.      scout to crash into a tree. Han and Scout #1 are in a rousing
  2501.      fistfight.

  2503.                               LUKE (sarcastic)
  2504.                Great. Come on.
  2505.  
  2506.      Luke starts for the scuffle, followed by Leia with her laser
  2507.      pistol drawn. As they run through the bushes, Leia stops and
  2508.      points to where two more scouts are sitting on their speeder
  2509.      bikes, with an unoccupied bike parked nearby.

  2511.                               LEIA
  2512.                Over there! Two more of them!
  2513.  
  2514.                               LUKE
  2515.                I see them. Wait, Leia!
  2516.  
  2517.      But Leia doesn't hear him and races for the remaining speeder
  2518.      bike. She starts it up and takes off as Luke jumps on the bike
  2519.      behind her.

  2522.                Quick! Jam their comlink. Center switch!

  2524.      Luke and Leia speed into the dense foliage in hot pursuit, barely
  2525.      avoiding two huge trees.

  2534.      The two fleeing Imperial scouts have a good lead as Luke and Leia
  2535.      pursue through the giant trees at 200 miles an hour, the fire
  2536.      from their bike's laser cannon hitting harmlessly near the moving
  2537.      targets.
  2538.  
  2539.                               LUKE
  2540.                Move closer!
  2541.  
  2542.      Leia guns it, closing the gap, as the two scouts recklessly veer
  2543.      through a narrow gap in the trees. One of the bikes SCRAPES a
  2544.      tree, slowing the scout.
  2545.  
  2546.                               LUKE
  2547.                Get alongside that one!
  2548.  
  2549.      Leia pulls her speeder bike up so close to the scout's bike that
  2550.      their steering vanes SCRAPE noisily. Luke leaps from his bike to
  2551.      the back of the scout's, grabs the Imperial warrior around the
  2552.      neck, and flips him off the bike, into a thick tree trunk. Luke
  2553.      gains control of the bike and follows Leia, who has pulled ahead.
  2554.      They tear off after the remaining scout.
  2555.  
  2556.                               LUKE
  2557.                Get him!
  2558.  
  2559.      The speeding chase passes TWO MORE IMPERIAL SCOUTS. These two
  2560.      swing into pursuit, chasing Luke and Leia, firing away with their
  2561.      laser cannon. The two Rebels look behind them just as Luke's bike
  2562.      takes a glancing hit.
  2563.  
  2564.                               LUKE (indicating the one ahead)
  2565.                Keep on that one! I'll take these two!
  2566.  
  2567.      With Leia shooting ahead, Luke suddenly slams his steering vanes
  2568.      into the braking mode. Luke's bike is a blur to the two pursuing
  2569.      scouts as they zip by him on either side. Luke slams his bike
  2570.      into forward and starts firing away, having switched places with
  2571.      his pursuers in a manner of seconds. Luke's aim is good and one
  2572.      scout's bike is blasted out of control. It explodes against a
  2573.      tree trunk.
  2574.  
  2575.      The scout's cohort takes one glance back at the flash and shifts
  2576.      into turbo drive, going even faster. Luke keeps on his tail.
  2577.  
  2578.      FAR AHEAD, Leia and the first scout are doing a highspeed slalom
  2579.      through the death-dealing trunks. Now Leia aims her bike skyward
  2580.      and rises out of sight.
  2581.  
  2582.      The scout turns in confusion, unable to see his pursuer.
  2583.      Suddenly, Leia dives down upon him from above, cannon blasting.
  2584.      The scout's bike takes a glancing hit.
  2585.  
  2586.      Leia moves in alongside him. The scout eyes her beside him,
  2587.      reaches down, and pulls out a handgun. Before Leia can react, the
  2588.      scout has blasted her bike, sending it out of control. Leia dives
  2589.      off as her bike explodes against a tree. The happy scout looks
  2590.      back at the explosion. But when he turns forward again, he is on
  2591.      a collision course with a giant fallen tree. He hits his brakes
  2592.      to no avail and disappears in a conflagration.
  2593.  
  2594.      ANOTHER PART OF THE FOREST: Luke and the last remaining scout
  2595.      continue their weaving chase through the trees. Now Luke moves up
  2596.      close. The scout responds by slamming his bike into Luke's. A
  2597.      fallen tree forms a bridge across their path. The scout zips
  2598.      under. Luke goes over the top and crashes his bike down on the
  2599.      scout's. Both riders look ahead - a wide trunk looms directly in
  2600.      Luke's path, but the scout's bike beside him makes it almost
  2601.      impossible for him to avoid it. Luke banks with all his might,
  2602.      leaning almost horizontal over the scout's bike, and is able to
  2603.      make it by, just clipping the tree. When he straightens, he and
  2604.      the scout discover that their two bikes have locked front vanes
  2605.      and are moving as one.
  2606.  
  2607.      Another big tree looms in Luke's path. He reacts instinctively
  2608.      and dives off his bike. The two bikes come apart a second before
  2609.      Luke's explodes against a tree. The scout sweeps out and circles
  2610.      back to find Luke.
  2611.  
  2612.      Luke rises from the undergrowth as the scout bears down on him
  2613.      and opens fire with his laser cannon. Luke ignites his laser
  2614.      sword and begins deflecting the bolts. The scout's bike keeps
  2615.      coming and it appears that in a second it will cut Luke in half.
  2616.      At the last instant, Luke steps aside and chops off the bike's
  2617.      control vanes with one mighty slash. The scout's bike begins to
  2618.      shudder, then, pitching and rolling, it rises up to slam directly
  2619.      into a tree in a giant ball of fire.

  2623.      Han, Chewie, and the droids, along with the rest of the squad,
  2624.      wait anxiously in the clearing. Artoo's radar screen sticks out
  2625.      of his domed head and revolves, scanning the forest. He beeps.
  2626.  
  2627.                               THREEPIO
  2628.                Oh, General Solo, somebody's coming. Oh!
  2629.  
  2630.      Han, Chewie, and the rest of the squad raise their weapons.
  2631.  
  2632.      Luke steps out of the foliage to find the weapons trained on him.
  2633.      He's too tired to care. He plops himself down on a boulder and
  2634.      looks around.
  2635.  
  2636.                               HAN
  2637.                Luke! Where's Leia?
  2638.  
  2639.                               LUKE (concerned)
  2640.                What? She didn't come back?
  2641.  
  2642.                               HAN
  2643.                I thought she was with you.
  2644.  
  2645.                               LUKE
  2646.                We got separated.
  2647.  
  2648.      Luke and Han exchange a silent, grim look. Luke gets up wearily.
  2649.  
  2650.                               LUKE
  2651.                Hey, we better go look for her.
  2652.  
  2653.      Han nods, and signals to a Rebel officer.
  2654.  
  2655.                               HAN
  2656.                Take the squad ahead.  We'll meet at the
  2657.                shield generator at 0300.
  2658.  
  2659.                               LUKE
  2660.                Come on, Artoo.  We'll need your scanners.
  2661.  
  2662.      Luke, Chewie, Han, and the droids move off in one direction as
  2663.      the squad proceeds in another.
  2664.  
  2665.                               THREEPIO
  2666.                Don't worry, Master Luke.  We know what to
  2667.                do.
  2668.  
  2669.      They move off into the woods.
  2670.  
  2671.                               THREEPIO (to Artoo)
  2672.                And you said it was pretty here. Ugh!
  2673.  
  2674. 67   EXT FOREST CLEARING - LEIA'S CRASH SITE                        67

  2676.      A strange little furry face with huge black eyes comes slowly
  2677.      into view. The creature is an EWOK, by the name of WICKET. He
  2678.      seems somewhat puzzled, and prods Leia with a spear. The princess
  2679.      groans; this frightens the stubby ball of fuzz and he prods her
  2680.      again. Leia sits up and stares at the three-foot-high Ewok. She
  2681.      tries to figure out where she is and what has happened. Her
  2682.      clothes are torn; she's bruised and disheveled.
  2683.  
  2684.      The Ewok jumps up and grabs a four-foot-long spear, which he
  2685.      holds in a defensive position. Leia watches him as he circles
  2686.      warily and begins poking her with the sharp point of the spear.
  2687.  
  2688.                               LEIA
  2689.                Cut it out!
  2690.  
  2691.      She stands up, and the Ewok quickly backs away.
  2692.  
  2693.                               LEIA
  2694.                I'm not gonna hurt you.
  2695.  
  2696.      Leia looks around at the dense forest, and at the charred remains
  2697.      of her speeder bike, then sits down, with a sigh, on a fallen
  2698.      log.
  2699.  
  2700.                               LEIA
  2701.                Well, looks like I'm stuck here. Trouble is,
  2702.                I don't know where here is.
  2703.  
  2704.      She puts her head in her hands to rub away some of the soreness
  2705.      from her fall. She looks over at the watchful little Ewok and
  2706.      pats the log beside her.
  2707.  
  2708.                               LEIA
  2709.                Well, maybe you can help me. Come on, sit
  2710.                down.
  2711.  
  2712.      Wicket holds his spear up warily and growls at her like a puppy.
  2713.      Leia pats the log again.
  2714.  
  2715.                               LEIA
  2716.                I promise I won't hurt you. Now come here.
  2717.  
  2718.      More growls and squeaks from the little bear creature.
  2719.  
  2720.                               LEIA
  2721.                All right. You want something to eat?
  2722.  
  2723.      She takes a scrap of food out of her pocket and offers it to him.
  2724.      Wicket takes a step backward, then cocks his head and moves
  2725.      cautiously toward Leia, chattering in his squeaky Ewok language.
  2726.  
  2727.                               LEIA
  2728.                That's right. Come on. Hmmm?
  2729.  
  2730.      Sniffing the food curiously, the Ewok comes toward Leia and sits
  2731.      on the log beside her. She takes off her helmet, and the little
  2732.      creature jumps back, startled again. He runs along the log,
  2733.      pointing his spear at her and chattering a blue streak. Leia
  2734.      holds out the helmet to him.
  2735.  
  2736.                               LEIA
  2737.                Look, it's a hat. It's not gonna hurt you.
  2738.                Look. You're a jittery little thing, aren't
  2739.                you?
  2740.  
  2741.      Reassured, Wicket lowers his spear and climbs back on the log,
  2742.      coming to investigate the helmet. Suddenly his ears perk up and
  2743.      he begins to sniff the air. He looks around warily, whispering
  2744.      some Ewokese warning to Leia.
  2745.  
  2746.                               LEIA
  2747.                What is it?
  2748.  
  2749.      Suddenly a laser bolt comes out of the foliage and explodes on
  2750.      the log next to Leia. Leia and Wicket both roll backwards off the
  2751.      log, hiding behind it. Leia holds her own laser gun ready, while
  2752.      Wicket disappears underneath the log. Another shot, and still no
  2753.      sight of anyone in the forest. Then Leia senses something and
  2754.      turns to find a large IMPERIAL SCOUT standing over her with his
  2755.      weapon pointed at her head. He reaches out his hand for her
  2756.      weapon.
  2757.  
  2758.                               SCOUT #l
  2759.                Freeze!  Come on, get up!
  2760.  
  2761.      She hands the weapon over, as a second scout emerges from the
  2762.      foliage in front of the log.
  2763.  
  2764.                               SCOUT #1
  2765.                Go get your ride and take her back to base.
  2766.  
  2767.                               SCOUT #2
  2768.                Yes, sir.
  2769.  
  2770.      The second scout starts toward his bike, as Wicket, crouched
  2771.      under the log, extends his spear and hits the first scout on the
  2772.      leg. The scout jumps and lets out an exclamation, and looks down
  2773.      at Wicket, puzzled. Leia grabs a branch and knocks him out. She
  2774.      dives for his laser pistol, and the second scout, now on his
  2775.      bike, takes off. Leia fires away and hits the escaping bike,
  2776.      causing it to crash into the first scout's bike, which flies end
  2777.      over end and explodes. The forest is quiet once more. Wicket
  2778.      pokes his fuzzy head up from behind the log and regards Leia with
  2779.      new respect. He mumbles his awe. Leia hurries over, looking
  2780.      around all the time, and motions the chubby little creature into
  2781.      the dense foliage.
  2782.  
  2783.                               LEIA
  2784.                Come on, let's get outta here.
  2785.  
  2786.      As they move into the foliage, Wicket takes the lead. He shrieks
  2787.      and tugs at Leia to follow him.
  2788.

  2791.      Darth Vader walks down the corridor to the Emperor's Tower and
  2792.      private elevator. The Emperor's private guard steps in Vader's
  2793.      path.

  2796.                Halt! The Emperor does not wish to be
  2797.                disturbed at the moment.
  2798.  
  2799.                               VADER
  2800.                (raising his gloved hand to the two guards
  2801.                and choking them with the Force)
  2802.                The Emperor will see me, now!

  2805.                (repeating Vader's command)

  2810.      Two red Imperial Guards stand watch at the elevator as the door
  2811.      opens to reveal Vader. Vader enters the eerie, foreboding throne
  2812.      room. It appears to be empty. His footsteps echo as he approaches
  2813.      the throne. He waits, absolutely still. The Emperor sits with his
  2814.      back to the Dark Lord.
  2815.  
  2816.                               EMPEROR
  2817.                I told you to remain on the command ship.
  2818.  
  2819.                               VADER
  2820.                A small Rebel force has penetrated the shield
  2821.                and landed on Endor.
  2822.  
  2823.                               EMPEROR (no surprise)
  2824.                Yes, I know.
  2825.  
  2826.                               VADER (after a beat)
  2827.                My son is with them.
  2828.  
  2829.                               EMPEROR (very cool)
  2830.                Are you sure?

  2864.      Han, Luke, Chewie, and the two droids are spread out as they move
  2865.      through the heavy foliage near the clearing where we last saw
  2866.      Leia. Luke finds Leia's helmet, picks it up with an expression of
  2867.      concern.

  2870.                Luke! Luke!
  2871.  
  2872.      Luke runs with the helmet to where Han has found the charred
  2873.      wreckage of a speeder bike in the grass.

  2875.                               THREEPIO
  2876.                Oh, Master Luke.

  2879.                There's two more wrecked speeders back there.
  2880.                And I found this.

  2882.      He tosses the helmet to Han.

  2885.                I'm afraid that Artoo's sensors can find no
  2886.                trace of Princess Leia.

  2888.                               HAN (gravely)
  2889.                I hope she's alright.

  2891.      Chewbacca growls, sniffing the air, then, with a bark, pushes off
  2892.      through the foliage.

  2895.                What, Chewie? What? Chewie!

  2897.      The others rush to keep up with the giant Wookiee. As he scoots
  2898.      along, Artoo whistles nervously.

  2902.      The group has reached a break in the undergrowth. Chewie walks up
  2903.      to a tall stake planted in the ground. There is a dead animal
  2904.      hanging from it.

  2906.                               HAN
  2907.                Hey, I don't get it.
  2908.  
  2909.      The rest of the group joins the Wookiee around the stake.
  2910.  
  2911.                               HAN (cont)
  2912.                Nah, it's just a dead animal, Chewie.
  2913.  
  2914.      Chewie can't resist. He reaches toward the meat.
  2915.  
  2916.                               LUKE
  2917.                Chewie, wa-wait!  Don't!

  2919.      Too late. The Wookiee has already pulled the animal from the
  2920.      stake. SPROOING! The group finds itself hanging upside down in an
  2921.      Ewok net, suspended high above the clearing. Artoo lets out a
  2922.      wild series of beeps and whistles, and Chewie howls his regret.
  2923.      Their bodies are a jumble in the net. Han removes a Wookiee paw
  2924.      from his mouth.
  2925.  
  2926.                               HAN
  2927.                Nice work. Great, Chewie! Great! Always
  2928.                thinking with your stomach.
  2929.  
  2930.                               LUKE
  2931.                Will you take it easy? Let's just figure out
  2932.                a way to get out of this thing. (trying to
  2933.                free an arm) Han, can you reach my
  2934.                lightsaber?
  2935.  
  2936.                               HAN
  2937.                Yeah, sure.
  2938.  
  2939.      Artoo is at the bottommost point in the net. He extends his
  2940.      cutting appendage and begins slicing at the net. Han is trying to
  2941.      squeeze an arm past Threepio to get at Luke's lightsaber. The net
  2942.      continues to spin.
  2943.  
  2944.                               THREEPIO
  2945.                Artoo, I'm not sure that's such a good idea.
  2946.                It's a very long dro-o-op!!
  2947.  
  2948.      Artoo has cut through and the entire group tumbles out of the
  2949.      net, crashing to the ground. As they regain their senses and
  2950.      sit up, they realize they are surrounded by dozens of Ewoks,
  2951.      each brandishing a long spear.
  2952.  
  2953.                               HAN
  2954.                Wha--?  Hey!  Point that thing someplace
  2955.                else.
  2956.  
  2957.      Han pushes the spear wielded by TEEBO out of his face and a
  2958.      second Ewok warrior comes up to argue with Teebo. The spear
  2959.      returns to Han's face. He grabs it angrily and starts to go for
  2960.      his laser pistol.
  2961.  
  2962.                               HAN
  2963.                Hey!
  2964.  
  2965.                               LUKE
  2966.                Han, don't. It'll be all right.
  2967.  
  2968.      The Ewoks swarm through them and confiscate their weapons. Luke
  2969.      lets them take his lightsaber. Chewie growls at the furry
  2970.      critters.
  2971.  
  2972.                               LUKE
  2973.                Chewie, give 'em your crossbow.
  2974.  
  2975.      Artoo and Threepio are just untangling themselves. Threepio gets
  2976.      free of the net and sits up, rattled.
  2977.  
  2978.                               THREEPIO
  2979.                Oh, my head. Oh, my goodness!
  2980.  
  2981.      When the Ewoks see Threepio, they let out a gasp and chatter
  2982.      among themselves. Threepio speaks to them in their native tongue.
  2983.      The Ewok nearest him drops his spear and prostrates himself
  2984.      before the droid. In a moment, all the Ewoks have followed suit.
  2985.      Chewie lets out a puzzled bark. Han and Luke regard the bowed
  2986.      creatures in wonder. The Ewoks begin to chant at Threepio.
  2987.  
  2988.                               LUKE
  2989.                Do you understand anything they're saying?
  2990.  
  2991.                               THREEPIO
  2992.                Oh, yes, Master Luke!  Remember that I am
  2993.                fluent in over six million forms of
  2994.                communication.
  2995.

  2997.                What are you telling them?
  2998.

  3000.                Hello, I think... I could be mistaken.
  3001.                They're using a very primitive dialect.  But
  3002.                I do believe they think I am some sort of god.

  3004.      Chewbacca and Artoo think that's very funny. Han and Luke
  3005.      exchange "what next?" looks.

  3008.                Well, why don't you use your divine influence
  3009.                and get us out of this?

  3013.                just wouldn't be proper.

  3022.      Han moves toward Threepio threateningly.

  3027.      Several Ewoks' spears are thrust in Han's face at the affront to
  3028.      their god. The Ewoks move in to protect their god and Han is
  3029.      surrounded by a menacing circle of spears, all aimed at him. He
  3030.      holds up his hands placatingly.

  3033.                My mistake. He's an old friend of mine.

  3037.      A procession of Ewoks winds through the ever-darkening forest.
  3038.      Their prisoners - Han, Luke, Chewie, and Artoo - are tied to long
  3039.      poles and wrapped in vines, cocoonlike.
  3040.  
  3041.      Each pole is carried on the shoulders of several Ewoks. Behind
  3042.      the captives, Threepio is carried on a litter, like a king, by
  3043.      the remaining creatures.
  3044.  
  3045. 73   EXT FOREST WALKWAY - MOON FOREST                               73

  3047.      The procession moves along a shaky, narrow, wooden walkway, high
  3048.      in the giant trees. It stops at the end of the walkway, which
  3049.      drops off into nothingness. On the other side of the abyss is a
  3050.      village of mud huts and rickety walkways, attached to the giant
  3051.      trees. The lead Ewok takes hold of a long vine and swings across
  3052.      to the village square; the other Ewoks follow suit.

  3056.      The procession winds its way into the village square. Mother
  3057.      Ewoks gather their babies up and scurry into their huts at the
  3058.      sight of the newcomers. The group stops before the largest hut.
  3059.  
  3060.      Han, Luke, Chewie, and Artoo are still bound to their poles. Han
  3061.      is placed on a spit above what looks like a barbecue pit and the
  3062.      others are leaned against a tree nearby. Threepio's litter/throne
  3063.      is gently placed near the pit. He watches with rapt fascination.
  3064.      Han, Luke, and Chewie are less than fascinated.
  3065.  
  3066.                               HAN
  3067.                I have a really bad feeling about this.
  3068.  
  3069.      Chewie growls his concern.
  3070.  
  3071.      Suddenly all activity stops as LOGRAY, the tribal Medicine Man,
  3072.      comes out of the big hut. He examines the captives carefully,
  3073.      goes to join Threepio, whose throne has been placed on an
  3074.      elevated platform. A larger, gray-haired Ewok, CHIEF CHIRPA, is
  3075.      examining Luke's lightsaber with great curiosity.
  3076.  
  3077.      Logray speaks to Threepio and the assemblage of fuzzy Ewoks,
  3078.      pointing to the prisoners tied to the stakes. The Ewoks begin
  3079.      filling the pit under Han with firewood.
  3080.  
  3081.                               HAN
  3082.                What did he say?
  3083.  
  3084.                               THREEPIO
  3085.                I'm rather embarrassed, General Solo, but it
  3086.                appears you are to be the main course at a
  3087.                banquet in my honor.
  3088.  
  3089.      The drums start beating, and all the furry heads turn to the
  3090.      large hut. Leia emerges, wearing an animal-skin dress. She sees
  3091.      what's happening at the same moment the prisoners see her.
  3092.  
  3093.                               HAN and LUKE
  3094.                Leia!
  3095.  
  3096.      As she moves toward them, the Ewoks block her way with raised
  3097.      spears.
  3098.  
  3099.                               LEIA
  3100.                Oh!
  3101.  
  3102.                               THREEPIO
  3103.                Your Royal Highness.
  3104.  
  3105.      Artoo and Chewie chime in with their welcome. Leia looks at the
  3106.      assembled Ewoks and sighs.
  3107.  
  3108.                               LEIA
  3109.                But these are my friends. Threepio, tell them
  3110.                they must be set free.
  3111.  
  3112.      Threepio talks to Chirpa and Logray, who listen and shake their
  3113.      heads negatively. The Medicine Man gestures toward the prisoners
  3114.      and barks some orders. Several Ewoks jump up and pile more wood
  3115.      on the barbecue with vigor. Leia trades frantic looks with Luke
  3116.      and Han.
  3117.  
  3118.                               HAN
  3119.                Somehow, I got the feeling that didn't help
  3120.                us very much.
  3121.  
  3122.                               LUKE
  3123.                Threepio, tell them if they don't do as you
  3124.                wish, you'll become angry and use your magic.
  3125.  
  3126.                               THREEPIO
  3127.                But Master Luke, what magic? couldn't

  3134.      steps forward and challenges Threepio. Luke closes his eyes and

  3138.                You see, Master Luke; they didn't believe me.
  3139.                Just...
  3140.  
  3141.      Now the litter/throne, with Threepio sitting upon it, rises from
  3142.      the ground. At first Threepio doesn't notice and keeps talking.
  3143.  
  3144.                               THREEPIO
  3145.                ... as I said they wouldn't. Wha-wha-what's
  3146.                happening! Oh! Oh, dear! Oh!
  3147.  
  3148.      The Ewoks fall back in terror from the floating throne. Now
  3149.      Threepio begins to spin as though he were on a revolving stool,
  3150.      with Threepio calling out in total panic at his situation.
  3151.  
  3152.                               THREEPIO
  3153.                Put me down! He-e-elp! Master Luke! Artoo!
  3154.                Somebody, somebody, help! Master Luke, Artoo!
  3155.                Artoo, quickly! Do something, somebody! Oh!
  3156.                Ohhh!
  3157.  
  3158.      Chief Chirpa yells orders to the cowering Ewoks. They rush up and
  3159.      release the bound prisoners. Luke and Han enfold Leia in a group
  3160.      embrace. Luke notices the spinning Threepio, with Artoo beeping
  3161.      up at him, and slowly lowers the golden droid and the throne to
  3162.      the ground. Logray orders the little droid cut down. Artoo
  3163.      crashes to the ground. When the Ewoks set him upright, the little
  3164.      droid is fighting mad. Artoo beeps a blue streak at the nearest
  3165.      Ewok, and begins pursuing him, finally getting close enough to
  3166.      zap him with an electric charge. The Ewok jumps two feet in the
  3167.      air and runs away, screaming. A small group of Ewoks surround the
  3168.      giant Wookiee, scratching their heads and marveling at his
  3169.      height.
  3170.  
  3171.                               THREEPIO
  3172.                Oh, oh, oh, oh! Thank goodness.
  3173.  
  3174.                               LUKE
  3175.                Thanks, Threepio.
  3176.  
  3177.                               THREEPIO (still shaken)
  3178.                I...I never knew I had it in me.

  3180. 75   INT CHIEF'S HUT - COUNCIL OF ELDERS                            75

  3182.      A glowing fire dances in the center of the spartan, low-ceilinged
  3183.      room, creating a kaleidoscope of shadows on the walls. Along one
  3184.      side, a group of ten Ewok elders flank Chief Chirpa, who sits on
  3185.      his throne. The Rebels sit along the walls of the hut, with
  3186.      Threepio between the two groups and Wicket and Teebo off to one
  3187.      side.
  3188.  
  3189.      Threepio is in the midst of a long, animated speech in the Ewok's
  3190.      squeaky native tongue. The Ewoks listen carefully and
  3191.      occasionally murmur comments to each other. Threepio points
  3192.      several times at the Rebel group and pantomimes a short history
  3193.      of the Galactic Civil War, mimicking the explosion and rocket
  3194.      sounds, imitating Imperial walkers. Throughout the long account,
  3195.      certain familiar names are distinguishable in English: Princess
  3196.      Leia, Artoo, Darth Vader, Death Star, Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Artoo
  3197.      begins beeping excitedly at Threepio.
  3198.  
  3199.                               THREEPIO
  3200.                Yes, Artoo. I was just coming to that.
  3201.  
  3202.      Threepio continues with: Millennium Falcon, Cloud City, Vader,
  3203.      Han Solo, carbonite, Sarlacc, bringing the history up to the
  3204.      present time.
  3205.  
  3206.      At the end of it, the Chief, Logray, and the elders confer, then
  3207.      nod in agreement. The Chief stands and makes a pronouncement.
  3208.  
  3209.      The drums begin to sound, and all the Ewoks stand with a great
  3210.      cheer and screeches.
  3211.  
  3212.                               HAN
  3213.                What's going on?
  3214.  
  3215.                               LEIA
  3216.                I don't know.
  3217.  
  3218.      Luke has been sharing the joy with smiling visage, but now
  3219.      something passes like a dark cloud through his consciousness. The
  3220.      others do not notice.
  3221.  
  3222.                               THREEPIO
  3223.                Wonderful! We are now a part of the tribe.
  3224.  
  3225.      Several of the little teddy bears run up and hug the Rebels.
  3226.  
  3227.                               HAN
  3228.                Just what I always wanted.
  3229.  
  3230.      Chewbacca is being enthusiastically embraced by an Ewok, while
  3231.      Wicket clings to Han's leg.
  3232.  
  3233.                               HAN (chuckles)
  3234.                Well, short help is better than no help at
  3235.                all, Chewie. (to Wicket) Thank you. Okay.
  3236.  
  3237.                               THREEPIO
  3238.                He says the scouts are going to show us the
  3239.                quickest way to the shield generator.
  3240.  
  3241.      Chewie barks. Luke has drifted to the back of the hut. Now he
  3242.      wanders outside into the moonlight. Leia notices and follows.
  3243.  
  3244.                               HAN
  3245.                Good. How far is it? Ask him. We need some
  3246.                fresh supplies, too. And try and get our
  3247.                weapons back.
  3248.  
  3249.      Han pulls Threepio back as he keeps trying to translate.
  3250.  
  3251.                               HAN (cont)
  3252.                And hurry up, will ya? I haven't got all day.

  3256.      The walkway is deserted now. The windows of the little huts glow
  3257.      and flicker from the fires inside. The sounds of the forest fill
  3258.      the soft night air. Luke has wandered away from the Chief's hut
  3259.      and stands staring up at the Death Star. Leia finds him like
  3260.      that.
  3261.  
  3262.                               LUKE
  3263.                Luke, what's wrong?
  3264.  
  3265.      Luke turns and looks at her a long moment.
  3266.  
  3267.                               LUKE
  3268.                Leia... do you remember your mother? Your
  3269.                real mother?

  3271.                               LEIA
  3272.                Just a little bit. She died when I was very
  3273.                young.

  3275.                               LUKE

  3316.      Luke moves close and his manner is gentle. And very calm.

  3325.                There's more. It won't be easy for you to
  3326.                hear it, but you must. If I don't make it
  3327.                back, you're the only hope for the Alliance.

  3329.      Leia is very disturbed by this. She moves away, as if to deny it.

  3332.                Luke, don't talk that way. You have a power
  3333.                I--I don't understand and could never have.

  3335.                               LUKE
  3336.                You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too.
  3337.                In time you'll learn to use it as I have. The
  3338.                Force is strong in my family. My father has
  3339.                it...I have it...and...my sister has it.

  3341.      Leia stares into his eyes. What she sees there frightens her. But
  3342.      she doesn't draw away. She begins to understand.

  3374.      away. He disappears onto the walkway that leads out of the
  3375.      village. Leia, bathed in moonlight, watches him go as Han comes
  3376.      out of the Chief's hut and comes over to her.

  3378.      Leia is crying, her body trembling. He realizes only now that she
  3379.      is crying.
  3380.  
  3381.                               HAN
  3382.                Hey, what's goin' on?
  3383.  
  3384.      Leia attempts to stifle her sobs and wipes her eyes.

  3386.                               LEIA
  3387.                Nothing. I - just want to be alone for a
  3388.                little while.

  3390.                               HAN (angry)
  3391.                Nothing?  Come on, tell me.  What's goin' on?
  3392.  
  3393.      She looks up at him, struggling to control herself.

  3398.                               HAN (loses his temper)
  3399.                Did you tell Luke? Is that who you could tell?

  3407.      He starts to walk away, exasperated, then stops and walks back to

  3416.      Han gathers her tightly in his protective embrace.

  3420.      An Imperial shuttle floats down from the Death Star and lands
  3421.      gracefully on the huge platform.
  3422.  
  3423.      Now, an Imperial walker approaches the platform from the darkness
  3424.      of the forest. The whole outpost - platform, walkers, military -
  3425.      looks particularly offensive in the midst of this verdant beauty.
  3426.

  3429.      Darth Vader walks down the ramp of the shuttle onto the platform,
  3430.      into an elevator, and appears on a ramp on a lower level. He
  3431.      walks toward another ramp exit and is met by two troopers and a
  3432.      commander with Luke, in binders, at their center. The young Jedi
  3433.      gazes at Vader with complete calm.
  3434.  
  3435.                               COMMANDER
  3436.                This is a Rebel that surrendered to us.
  3437.                Although he denies it, I believe there may be
  3438.                more of them, and I request permission to
  3439.                conduct a further search of the area.
  3440.  
  3441.      The commander extends his hand, revealing Luke's lightsaber.
  3442.  
  3443.                               COMMANDER
  3444.                He was armed only with this.
  3445.  
  3446.      Vader looks at Luke, turns away and faces the commander, taking
  3447.      the lightsaber from the commander's hand.
  3448.  
  3449.                               VADER
  3450.                Good work, Commander. Leave us. Conduct your
  3451.                search and bring his companions to me.
  3452.  
  3453.                               COMMANDER
  3454.                Yes, my Lord.
  3455.  
  3456.      The officer and troops withdraw. Vader and Luke are left standing
  3457.      alone in the oddly tranquil beauty of the place. The sounds of
  3458.      the forest filter in upon them.

  3479.                Emperor hasn't driven it from you fully. That
  3480.                is why you couldn't destroy me. That's why

  3483.      Vader looks down from Luke to the lightsaber in his own black-
  3484.      gloved hand. He seems to ponder Luke's words.
  3485.  
  3486.                               VADER (indicating lightsaber)
  3487.                I see you have constructed a new lightsaber.
  3488.  
  3489.      Vader ignites the lightsaber and holds it to examine its humming,
  3490.      brilliant blade.
  3491.  
  3492.                               VADER
  3493.                Your skills are complete. Indeed, you are
  3494.                powerful, as the Emperor has foreseen.
  3495.  
  3496.      They stand for a moment, the Vader extinguishes the lightsaber.
  3497.  
  3498.                               LUKE
  3499.                Come with me.
  3500.  
  3501.                               VADER
  3502.                Obi-Wan once thought as you do.
  3503.  
  3504.      Luke steps close to Vader, then stops. Vader is still.
  3505.  
  3506.                               VADER
  3507.                You don't know the power of the dark side. I
  3508.                must obey my master.

  3510.                               LUKE
  3511.                I will not turn...and you'll be forced to
  3512.                kill me.

  3527.      Vader signals to some distant stormtroopers. He and Luke stand
  3528.      staring at one another for a long moment.

  3535.      Han, Leia, Chewbacca, the droids, Wicket, and another Ewok scout,
  3536.      PAPLOO, hide on a ridge overlooking the massive Imperial shield
  3537.      generator. At the base of the generator is an Imperial landing
  3538.      platform. Leia studies the installation.
  3539.  
  3540.                               LEIA
  3541.                The main entrance to the control bunker's on
  3542.                the far side of that landing platform. This
  3543.                isn't gonna be easy.
  3544.  
  3545.                               HAN
  3546.                Hey, don't worry. Chewie and me got into a
  3547.                lot of places more heavily guarded than this.
  3548.  
  3549.      Wicket and Paploo are chattering away in Ewok language. They
  3550.      speak to Threepio.
  3551.

  3553.                What's he saying?
  3554.  
  3555.                               THREEPIO
  3556.                He says there's a secret entrance on the
  3557.                other side of the ridge.

  3561.      The vast fleet hangs in space near a blue planet. A giant Rebel
  3562.      Star Cruiser is up at the front, but now the Millennium Flacon
  3563.      roars up to a spot ahead of it, tiny in comparison.

  3567.      Lando is in the pilot seat. His alien copilot, NIEN NUNB, takes
  3568.      some getting used to in the familiar environs of the Falcon's
  3569.      cockpit. Lando speaks into his comlink.

  3572.                Admiral, we're in position. All fighters
  3573.                accounted for.
  3574.  
  3575.                               ACKBAR (VO)
  3576.                Proceed with the countdown. All groups assume
  3577.                attack coordinates.

  3579.      Lando turns to his weird copilot.

  3582.                Don't worry, my friends are down there.
  3583.                They'll have that shield down on time...(to
  3584.                himself) or this'll be the shortest offensive

  3587.      The copilot flips some switches and grunts an alien comment.

  3596.      He pulls a lever, and the stars outside begin to streak.

  3600.      We are treated to an awesome sight: first the Millennium Falcon,
  3601.      then Ackbar's Star Cruiser, then, in large segments, the huge
  3602.      fleet ROARS INTO HYPERSPACE. And disappears.

  3606.      Han, Leia, Chewie, the droids, and their two Ewok guides, Wicket
  3607.      and Paploo, have reunited with the Rebel strike squad. The entire
  3608.      group is spread through the thick undergrowth. Below them is the
  3609.      BUNKER that leads into the generator. Four Imperial scouts, their
  3610.      speeder bikes parked nearby, keep watch over the bunker entrance.
  3611.      Chewie growls an observation, and Paploo chatters away to Han in
  3612.      Ewok language.
  3613.  
  3614.                               HAN
  3615.                Back door, huh? Good idea.
  3616.  
  3617.      Wicket and Paploo continue their Ewok conversation.
  3618.  
  3619.                               HAN (cont)
  3620.                It's only a few guards. This shouldn't be too
  3621.                much trouble.

  3623.                               LEIA
  3624.                Well, it only takes one to sound the alarm.
  3625.  
  3626.                               HAN (with self-confident grin)
  3627.                Then we'll do it real quiet-like.

  3629.      Threepio explains what is going on to Wicket and Paploo. The
  3630.      Ewoks chatter a moment between themselves. Then Paploo jumps up
  3631.      and scampers into the underbrush.
  3632.  
  3633.      Threepio asks Wicket where Paploo went and is given a short
  3634.      reply.
  3635.  
  3636.                               THREEPIO
  3637.                Oh! Oh, my. Uh, Princess Leia!
  3638.  
  3639.                               LEIA
  3640.                Quiet.

  3643.                I'm afraid our furry companion has gone and
  3644.                done something rather rash.

  3651.      Paploo has slipped out of the undergrowth near where the Imperial
  3652.      scouts are lounging. He silently swings his furry ball of a body
  3653.      onto one of the scout's speeder bikes and begins flipping
  3654.      switches at random. Suddenly, the bike's engine fires up with a
  3655.      tremendous ROAR. Paploo grins and continues flipping switches.
  3656.      The scouts leap up in surprise.
  3657.

  3660.      Han, Leia and company watch in distress. Chewie barks.

  3663.                There goes our surprise attack.

  3667.      The Imperial scouts race toward Paploo just as his speeder zooms
  3668.      into motion. Paploo hangs on by his paws and shoots away into the
  3669.      forest.

  3674.      Three of the Imperial scouts jump on their rocket bikes and speed
  3675.      away in pursuit. The fourth watches them go from his post at the
  3676.      door.

  3680.      Han, Leia, and Chewie exchange delighted looks.
  3681.  
  3682.                               HAN
  3683.                Not bad for a little furball. There's only
  3684.                one left. You stay here. We'll take care of

  3687.      Han and the Wookiee nod at each other and slip down toward the
  3688.      bunker. Threepio moves to stand next to Wicket and Artoo.
  3689.  
  3690.                               THREEPIO
  3691.                I have decided that we shall stay here.

  3695.      Paploo sails through the trees, more lucky than in control. It's
  3696.      scary, but he loves it. When the Imperial scouts pull within
  3697.      sight behind him and begin firing laser bolts, he decides he's
  3698.      had enough. As he rounds a tree, out of their sight, Paploo grabs
  3699.      a vine and swings up into the trees. A moment later, the scouts
  3700.      tear under him in pursuit of the still-flying, unoccupied bike.
  3701.

  3704.      Han sneaks up behind the remaining Imperial scout, taps him on
  3705.      the shoulder and lets the scout chase him behind the bunker into
  3706.      the arms of the waiting Rebel strike team. Han returns to the
  3707.      front, and taps out a pattern on the bunker door's control panel.
  3708.      Everyone stands out of sight, police-style, as the door opens.
  3709.      Han and Leia peek inside. No sign of life. The group enters the
  3710.      bunker silently, leaving one lookout behind.
  3711.

  3714.      The elevator opens. Vader and Luke enter the room alone. They
  3715.      walk across the dark space to stand before the throne, father and
  3716.      son side by side beneath the gaze of the Emperor. Vader bows to
  3717.      his Master.
  3718.  
  3719.                               EMPEROR
  3720.                Welcome, young Skywalker. I have been
  3721.                expecting you.
  3722.  
  3723.      Luke peers at the hooded figure defiantly. The Emperor then looks
  3724.      down at Luke's binders.
  3725.  
  3726.                               EMPEROR
  3727.                You no longer need those.
  3728.  
  3729.      The Emperor motions ever so slightly with his finger and Luke's
  3730.      binders fall away, clattering to the floor. Luke looks down at
  3731.      his own hands, free now to reach out and grab the Emperor's neck.
  3732.      He does nothing.
  3733.  
  3734.                               EMPEROR
  3735.                Guards, leave us.
  3736.  
  3737.      The red-cloaked guards turn and disappear behind the elevator.
  3738.  
  3739.                               EMPEROR (to Luke)
  3740.                I'm looking forward to completing your
  3741.                training. In time you will call me Master.
  3742.  
  3743.                               LUKE
  3744.                You're gravely mistaken. You won't convert me
  3745.                as you did my father.
  3746.  
  3747.      The Emperor gets down from his throne and walks up very close to
  3748.      Luke. The Emperor looks into his eyes and, for the first time,
  3749.      Luke can perceive the evil visage within the hood.
  3750.  
  3751.                               EMPEROR
  3752.                Oh, no, my young Jedi. You will find that it
  3753.                is you who are mistaken...about a great
  3754.                many things.
  3755.  
  3756.                               VADER
  3757.                His lightsaber.
  3758.  
  3759.      Vader extends a gloved hand toward the Emperor, revealing Luke's
  3760.      lightsaber. The Emperor takes it.
  3761.  
  3762.                               EMPEROR
  3763.                Ah, yes, a Jedi's weapon. Much like your
  3764.                father's. By now you must know your father
  3765.                can never be turned from the dark side. So
  3766.                will it be with you.

  3768.                               LUKE
  3769.                You're wrong. Soon I'll be dead...and you
  3770.                with me.
  3771.  
  3772.      The Emperor laughs.

  3830.      The Rebel troops herd the generator controllers away from their
  3831.      panels. Leia glances at one of the screens on the control panel.

  3840.      Outside, Threepio watches nervously in the bushes as several more

  3861.      them and their cohorts. A poised force of Imperial troops

  3863.      the Rebel contingent. Han, Leia, and Chewie exchange looks.

  3912.      Lando shoots a concerned look out at the approaching Death Star
  3913.      as the implications of what he's just said sink in. He hits a
  3914.      switch on his comlink.

  3936.      course abruptly. Other ships in the fleet shoot by outside as the

  3943.      A Mon Calamari controller turns away from his screen and calls
  3944.      out to Ackbar, quite excited. The Admiral rushes over to the

  3948.                Admiral, we have enemy ships in sector 47.

  3950.      On the screen can be seen the moon, Death Star, and the massive
  3951.      Imperial fleet. Ackbar moves to the comlink.

  3959.      There is much excitement on the bridge as the attack begins.

  3962.      into an armada of TIE fighters. The sky explodes as a fierce
  3963.      dogfight ensues in and around the giant Rebel cruisers.

  3985.      The Emperor is sitting in his throne, with Vader standing at his
  3986.      side. Luke moves to look through a small section of the window.

  3990.                destruction of the Alliance, and the end of
  3991.                your insignificant Rebellion.
  3992.  
  3993.      Luke is in torment. He glances at his lightsaber sitting on the
  3994.      armrest of the throne. The Emperor watches him and smiles,
  3995.      touches the lightsaber.

  3998.                You want this, don't you? The hate is
  3999.                swelling in you now. Take your Jedi weapon.
  4000.                Use it. I am unarmed. Strike me down with it.

  4015.      Han, Leia, Chewie, and the rest of the strike team are led out of
  4016.      the bunker by their captors. The surrounding area, deserted
  4017.      before, is now crowded with two-legged Imperial walkers and
  4018.      hundreds of Imperial troops. The situation looks hopeless.
  4019.  
  4020.                               STORMTROOPER
  4021.                All right, move it! I said move it! Go on!
  4022.  
  4023.      From the undergrowth beyond the clearing comes a wild series of
  4024.      beeps and whistles. And --
  4025.  
  4026.                               THREEPIO
  4027.                Hello! I say, over there! Were you looking
  4028.                for me?
  4029.  
  4030.                               BUNKER COMMANDER
  4031.                Bring those two down here!
  4032.  
  4033.                               STORMTROOPER
  4034.                Let's go!

  4036.      Artoo and Threepio are standing near one of the big trees. As six
  4037.      Imperial stormtroopers rush over to take them captive, the two
  4038.      droids duck out of sight behind the tree.
  4039.  
  4040.                               THREEPIO
  4041.                Well, they're on their way. Artoo, are you
  4042.                sure this was a good idea?
  4043.  
  4044.                               STORMTROOPER
  4045.                Freeze! Don't move!
  4046.  
  4047.                               THREEPIO
  4048.                We surrender.
  4049.  
  4050.      The stormtroopers come around the tree and find the two droids
  4051.      waiting quietly to be taken. As the Imperial troops move to do
  4052.      that, however, a band of Ewoks drops down from above and
  4053.      overpowers them.
  4054.  
  4055.                               THREEPIO
  4056.                Ohhh! Stand back, Artoo.
  4057.  
  4058.      In a nearby tree, an Ewok raises a horn to his lips and sounds
  4059.      the EWOK ATTACK CALL. All hell breaks loose as hundreds of Ewoks
  4060.      throw their fuzzy bodies into the fray against the assembled
  4061.      stormtroopers and their awesome two-legged walkers.
  4062.  
  4063.      Biker scouts dart about blasting Ewoks, only to be crushed by a
  4064.      volley of rocks tossed by Ewoks from the trees above.
  4065.  
  4066.      In the confusion of the battle, Han and Leia break away and dive
  4067.      for the cover of the bunker door as explosions erupt around them.
  4068.      Han goes to the bunker door control panel.
  4069.  
  4070.                               LEIA
  4071.                The code's changed. We need Artoo!
  4072.  
  4073.                               HAN
  4074.                Here's the terminal.
  4075.  
  4076.                               LEIA (into comlink)
  4077.                Artoo, where are you? We need you at the
  4078.                bunker right away.

  4080.      Artoo and Threepio are hiding behind a log as the battle rages
  4081.      around them. Suddenly the stubby little astrodroid lets out a
  4082.      series of whistles and shoots off across the battlefield.
  4083.      Threepio, panicked, runs after him.
  4084.  
  4085.                               THREEPIO
  4086.                Going? What do you mean, you're going. But--
  4087.                but going where, Artoo? No, what! Artoo! Oh,
  4088.                this is no time for heroics. Come back!
  4089.  
  4090.      Biker scouts race around and over the two droids, blasting away
  4091.      at the little Ewoks as the furries scurry for cover.
  4092.  
  4093.      A group of Ewoks have moved a primitive catapult into position.
  4094.      They fire off a large boulder that hits one of the walkers. The
  4095.      walker turns and heads for the catapult, blasting away with both
  4096.      guns. The Ewoks abandon their weapons and flee in all directions.
  4097.      Just as the walker moves in to stomp the catapult, Ewoks drop
  4098.      vines restraining two huge logs that swing down and smash the
  4099.      walker's head flat.
  4100.  
  4101.      A line of Ewoks hang desperately to a vine that is hooked to a
  4102.      walker's foot. As the walker moves along, the fuzzy creatures are
  4103.      dragged behind.
  4104.  
  4105.      Two speeder bikes chase Ewoks through the underbrush. As the
  4106.      scouts round a tree, they are knocked off their bikes by a vine
  4107.      tied between two trees.
  4108.

  4111.      The Falcon and other Rebel fighters are engaged in a ferocious
  4112.      combat with Imperial TIE fighters, the battle raging around the
  4113.      cruisers of the Rebel armada.

  4219.      several TIE fighters.

  4224.      cruiser. Lando and his copilot are stunned by the sight of the

  4267.      The little droid moves to the terminal and plugs in his computer
  4268.      arm. A large explosion hits near Artoo, knocking him head over
  4269.      heels, finally landing on his feet. The stubby astrodroid's
  4270.      head is spinning and smoldering. Suddenly there is a loud
  4271.      SPROOING and Han and Leia turn around to see Artoo with all his
  4272.      compartment doors open, and all of his appendages sticking out;
  4273.      water and smoke spurt out of the nozzles in his body. Han rushes
  4274.      to the terminal, as Threepio rushes to his wounded companion.
  4275.  
  4276.                               THREEPIO
  4277.                My goodness! Artoo, why did you have to be so
  4278.                brave?
  4279.  
  4280.                               HAN
  4281.                Well, I suppose I could hotwire this thing.
  4282.  
  4283.                               LEIA
  4284.                I'll cover you.

  4286.      Ewoks in handmade, primitive hanggliders drop rocks onto the
  4287.      stormtroopers, dive-bombing their deadly adversaries.  One is hit
  4288.      in the wing with laser fire and crashes.  A walker lumbers
  4289.      forward, shooting laser blasts at frantic Ewoks running in all
  4290.      directions.  Two Ewoks are struck down by laser blasts.  One
  4291.      tries to awaken his friend, then realizes that he is dead.

  4295.      The Rebel fleet continues to be picked off, from one side by the
  4296.      Death Star's deadly beam, from the other by the rampaging
  4297.      Imperial Star Destroyers.

  4301.      Lando steers the Falcon wildly through an obstacle course of
  4302.      floating giants. He's been yelling into the comlink.

  4306.                and engage those Star Destroyers at point-
  4307.                blank range.
  4308.  
  4309.                               ACKBAR
  4310.                At that close range, we won't last long
  4311.                against those Star Destroyers.

  4313.                               LANDO
  4314.                We'll last longer then we will against that
  4315.                Death Star...and we might just take a few of
  4316.                them with us.

  4318.      The Rebel cruisers move very close to the Imperial Star
  4319.      Destroyers and begin to blast away at point-blank range. Tiny
  4320.      fighters race across the giant surfaces, against a backdrop of
  4321.      laser fire.

  4323.      The control tower of a Star Destroyer is under attack.
  4324.

  4331.      The damaged Y-wing plummets toward the Star Destroyer, and
  4332.      crashes into the control tower, exploding.

  4336.      Out of the window and on the view screens, the Rebel fleet is
  4337.      being decimated in blinding explosions of light and debris. But
  4338.      in here there is no sound of battle. The Emperor turns to Luke.

  4341.                Your fleet has lost. And your friends on the
  4342.                Endor moon will not survive. There is no
  4343.                escape, my young apprentice. The Alliance
  4344.                will die...as will your friends.
  4345.  
  4346.      Luke's eyes are full of rage. Vader watches him.
  4347.  
  4348.                               EMPEROR
  4349.                Good. I can feel your anger. I am
  4350.                defenseless.  Take your weapon! Strike me
  4351.                down with all your hatred, and your journey
  4352.                towards the dark side will be complete.
  4353.  
  4354.      Luke can resist no longer. The lightsaber flies into his hand. He
  4355.      ignites it in an instant and swings at the Emperor. Vader's
  4356.      lightsaber flashes into view, blocking Luke's blow before it can
  4357.      reach the Emperor. The two blades spark at contact. Luke turns to
  4358.      fight his father.
  4359.

  4362.      The battle rages on. Stormtroopers fire on Ewoks with
  4363.      sophisticated weapons while their furry little adversaries sneak
  4364.      up behind the Imperial troopers and bash them over the head with
  4365.      large clubs.
  4366.  
  4367.      A walker marches through the undergrowth blasting Ewoks as it
  4368.      goes. An Ewok warrior gives the signal, and a pile of logs is cut
  4369.      loose. The logs tumble under the walker's feet, causing it to
  4370.      slip and slide until it finally topples over with a great crash.
  4371.  
  4372.      A scout bike races past and is lassoed with a heavy vine. The
  4373.      other end of the vine is tied to a tree, and the bike swings
  4374.      around in ever-tightening circles until it runs out of rope and
  4375.      crashes into the trees with a huge explosion.
  4376.  
  4377.      Chewie swings on a vine to the roof of one of the walkers. Two
  4378.      Ewoks cling to him. They land with a thud on the top of the
  4379.      lurching machine, then hang on for dear life. One of the Ewoks
  4380.      peeks through the window.

  4386.                Get him off of there!
  4387.  
  4388.      The walker pilot opens the hatch to see what's going on. He is
  4389.      yanked out and tossed overboard before he can scream. The two
  4390.      Ewoks jump into the cockpit and knock the second pilot
  4391.      unconscious. The Ewoks are thrown violently as the mighty machine
  4392.      careens out of control. Outside, Chewie is almost knocked
  4393.      overboard; he sticks his head into the hatch with a series of
  4394.      angry barks. The Ewoks are too busy and frightened to listen to
  4395.      the Wookiee's complaint. Chewie slips inside the walker.
  4396.  
  4397.      Chewbacca's walker moves through the forest, firing laser blasts

  4404.      Han works furiously at the control panel; wires spark as he
  4405.      attempts to hotwire the door. He motions to Leia, who is blasting
  4406.      away at some stormtroopers.

  4408.                               HAN
  4409.                I think I got it. I got it!
  4410.  
  4411.      The three wires spark as the connection is made. With a LOUD
  4412.      WHOOSH, a second blast door crashes down in front of the first.
  4413.  
  4414.      Han frowns and turns back to the wires again. Leia exchanges
  4415.      shots with stormtroopers in the bushes, then suddenly cries out
  4416.      in pain, her shoulder hit by a laser blast.
  4417.  
  4418.                               THREEPIO
  4419.                Oh, Princess Leia, are you all right?
  4420.  
  4421.                               HAN
  4422.                Let's see.
  4423.

  4425.                It's not bad.

  4438.      Leia holds her laser gun ready, behind Han, out of view of the
  4439.      two stormtroopers moving toward them. Han and Leia's eyes lock;
  4440.      the moment seems suspended in time.

  4442.                               HAN
  4443.                I love you.
  4444.  
  4445.      Another shared look between them, as she smiles up at Han.
  4446.  
  4447.                               LEIA
  4448.                I know.
  4449.  
  4450.                               STORMTROOPER
  4451.                Hands up! Stand up!
  4452.  
  4453.      Han stands up slowly and turns, revealing the gun in Leia's hand.
  4454.      She disposes of the stormtroopers in a flash. As Han turns back
  4455.      toward Leia, he looks up to see a giant walker approach and stand
  4456.      before him, its deadly weapons aimed right at him.
  4457.  
  4458.                               HAN (to Leia)
  4459.                Stay back.
  4460.  
  4461.      The hatch on top of the walker opens and Chewie sticks his head
  4462.      out and barks triumphantly.
  4463.  
  4464.                               HAN
  4465.                Chewie!  Get down here!  She's wounded!  No,
  4466.                wait....  I got an idea.

  4470.      Luke and Vader are engaged in a man-to-man duel of lightsabers
  4471.      even more vicious then the battle on Bespin. But the young Jedi
  4472.      has grown stronger in the interim, and now the advantage shifts
  4473.      to him. Vader is forced back, losing his balance, and is knocked
  4474.      down the stairs. Luke stands at the top of the stairs, ready to
  4475.      attack.
  4476.  
  4477.                               EMPEROR (laughing)
  4478.                Good.  Use your aggressive feelings, boy!  Let
  4479.                the hate flow through you.
  4480.  
  4481.      Luke looks momentarily toward the Emperor, then back to Vader,
  4482.      and realizes he is using the dark side. He steps back, turns off
  4483.      his lightsaber, and relaxes, driving the hate from his being.
  4484.  
  4485.                               VADER
  4486.                Obi-Wan has taught you well.
  4487.  
  4488.                               LUKE
  4489.                I will not fight you, father.
  4490.  
  4491.      Vader walks back up the stairs to Luke.
  4492.  
  4493.                               VADER
  4494.                You are unwise to lower your defenses.
  4495.  
  4496.      Vader attacks, forcing Luke on the defensive. The young Jedi
  4497.      leaps in an amazing reverse flip up to the safety of the catwalk
  4498.      overhead. Vader stands below him.
  4499.  
  4500.                               LUKE
  4501.                Your thoughts betray you, father. I feel the
  4502.                good in you...the conflict.
  4503.  
  4504.                               VADER
  4505.                There is no conflict.
  4506.  
  4507.                               LUKE
  4508.                You couldn't bring yourself to kill me
  4509.                before, and I don't believe you'll destroy me
  4510.                now.
  4511.  
  4512.                               VADER
  4513.                You underestimate the power of the dark side.
  4514.                If you will not fight, then you will meet
  4515.                your destiny.
  4516.  
  4517.      Vader throws the laser sword and it cuts through the supports
  4518.      holding the catwalk, then returns to Vader's hand. Luke tumbles
  4519.      to the ground in a shower of sparks and rolls out of sight under
  4520.      the Emperor's platform. Vader moves to find him.
  4521.  
  4522.                               EMPEROR (laughs)
  4523.                Good.  Good.
  4524.

  4527.      The two armadas, like their sea-bound ancestors, blast away at
  4528.      each other in individual point-blank confrontations. A Star
  4529.      Destroyer explodes. The Rebel victor limps away, its back half
  4530.      alive with a series of minor explosions. The Rebel cruiser
  4531.      manages to move in next to a second Star Destroyer before it
  4532.      explodes completely, taking the Imperial Star Destroyer with it.
  4533.      The Falcon and several fighters attack one of the larger Imperial
  4534.      ships.

  4557.                routed. They're fleeing into the woods. We
  4558.                need reinforcements to continue the pursuit.

  4560.      The controllers cheer.

  4571.      As the door to the bunker opens and the Imperial troops rush out,
  4572.      they're surprised to find themselves surrounded by Rebels, their
  4573.      weapons pointed at them. Ewoks holding bows and arrows appear on
  4574.      the roof of the bunker. The Imperial troops throw down their guns
  4575.      as Han and Chewie rush inside the bunker with explosive charges.

  4580.      plant explosive charges on the control panels and rush out.

  4587.      Vader stalks the low-ceilinged area on the level below the
  4588.      throne, searching for Luke in the semi-darkness, his lightsaber

  4595.                I will not fight you.
  4596.  
  4597.                               VADER
  4598.                Give yourself to the dark side. It is the
  4599.                only way you can save your friends. Yes, your
  4600.                thoughts betray you. Your feelings for them

  4603.      Vader stops and senses something. Luke shuts his eyes tightly, in
  4604.      anguish.
  4605.  
  4606.                               VADER
  4607.                Sister! So...you have a twin sister. Your
  4608.                feelings have now betrayed her, too. Obi-Wan
  4609.                was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure
  4610.                is complete. If you will not turn to the dark
  4611.                side, then perhaps she will.
  4612.  
  4613.                               LUKE
  4614.                Never-r-r!
  4615.  
  4616.      Luke ignites his lightsaber and screams in anger, rushing at his
  4617.      father with a frenzy we have not seen before. Sparks fly as Luke
  4618.      and Vader fight in the cramped area. Luke's hatred forces Vader
  4619.      to retreat out of the low area and across a bridge overlooking a
  4620.      vast elevator shaft. Each stroke of Luke's sword drives his
  4621.      father further toward defeat.
  4622.  
  4623.      The Dark Lord is knocked to his knees, and as he raises his sword
  4624.      to block another onslaught, Luke slashes Vader's right hand off
  4625.      at the wrist, causing metal and electronic parts to fly from the
  4626.      mechanical stump. Vader's sword clatters uselessly away, over the
  4627.      edge of the platform and into the bottomless shaft below. Luke
  4628.      moves over Vader and holds the blade of his sword to the Dark
  4629.      Lord's throat. The Emperor watches with uncontrollable, pleased
  4630.      agitation.
  4631.  
  4632.                               EMPEROR
  4633.                Good! Your hate has made you powerful. Now,
  4634.                fulfill your destiny and take your father's
  4635.                place at my side!
  4636.  
  4637.      Luke looks at his father's mechanical hand, then to his own
  4638.      mechanical, black-gloved hand, and realizes how much he is
  4639.      becoming like his father. He makes the decision for which he
  4640.      has spent a lifetime in preparation. Luke steps back and hurls
  4641.      his lightsaber away.
  4642.  
  4643.                               LUKE
  4644.                Never! I'll never turn to the dark side.
  4645.                You've failed, Your Highness. I am a Jedi,
  4646.                like my father before me.
  4647.  
  4648.      The Emperor's glee turns to rage.
  4649.  
  4650.                               EMPEROR

  4655.      Han and several of the fighters run out of the bunker and race
  4656.      across the clearing.

  4661.      A shock wave knocks them flat as the bunker explodes, followed by
  4662.      a spectacular display as the huge shield-generator radar dish
  4663.      explodes along with the bunker.

  4667.      Ackbar, sitting in his control chair, speaks into the radio.

  4670.                The shield is down! Commence attack on the
  4671.                Death Star's main reactor.

  4674.                We're on our way. Red Group, Gold Group, all
  4675.                fighters follow me. (laughs) Told you they'd
  4676.                do it!
  4677.  
  4678.      The Falcon, followed by several smaller Rebel fighters, heads
  4679.      toward the unfinished superstructure of the Death Star.
  4680.

  4683.      Luke stands still, as the Emperor reaches the bottom of the
  4684.      stairs. The Emperor's laughter has turned to anger. He raises his
  4685.      arms toward Luke.

  4687.                               EMPEROR
  4688.                If you will not be turned, you will be
  4689.                destroyed.
  4690.  
  4691.      Blinding bolts of energy, evil lightning, shoot from the
  4692.      Emperor's hands at Luke. Even in his surprise, the young Jedi
  4693.      tries to use the Force to deflect them. At first he is half
  4694.      successful, but after a moment the bolts of energy are coming
  4695.      with such speed and power the young Jedi shrinks before them, his
  4696.      knees buckling. The wounded Vader struggles to his feet, and
  4697.      moves to stand at his master's side.
  4698.  
  4699.                               EMPEROR
  4700.                Young fool...only now, at the end, do you
  4701.                understand.
  4702.  
  4703.      Luke is almost unconscious beneath the continuing assault of the
  4704.      Emperor's lightning. He clutches a canister to keep from falling
  4705.      into the bottomless shaft as the bolts tear through him.
  4706.  
  4707.                               EMPEROR
  4708.                Your feeble skills are no match for the power
  4709.                of the dark side. You have paid the price for
  4710.                your lack of vision.
  4711.  
  4712.      Luke writhes on the floor in unbearable pain, reaching weakly up
  4713.      toward where Vader stands watching.
  4714.  
  4715.                               LUKE (groans)
  4716.                Father, please. Help me.
  4717.  
  4718.      Again Vader stands, watching Luke. He looks at his master, the
  4719.      Emperor, then back to Luke on the floor.
  4720.  
  4721.                               EMPEROR
  4722.                Now, young Skywalker...you will die.
  4723.  
  4724.      Although it would not have seemed possible, the outpouring of
  4725.      bolts from the Emperor's fingers actually increases in intensity,
  4726.      the sound screaming through the room. Luke's body writhes in
  4727.      pain.
  4728.  
  4729.      Vader grabs the Emperor from behind, fighting for control of the
  4730.      robed figure despite the Dark Lord's weakened body and gravely
  4731.      weakened arm. The Emperor struggles in his embrace, his bolt-
  4732.      shooting hands now lifted high, away from Luke. Now the white
  4733.      lightning arcs back to strike at Vader. He stumbles with his load
  4734.      as the sparks rain off his helmet and flow down over his black
  4735.      cape. He holds his evil master high over his head and walks to
  4736.      the edge of the abyss at the central core of the throne room. With
  4737.      one final burst of his once awesome strength, Darth Vader hurls
  4738.      the Emperor's body into the bottomless shaft.
  4739.  
  4740.      The Emperor's body spins helplessly into the void, arcing as it
  4741.      falls into the abyss. Finally, when the body is far down the
  4742.      shaft, it explodes, creating a rush of air through the room.
  4743.      Vader's cape is whipped by the wind and he staggers, and
  4744.      collapses toward the bottomless hole. Luke crawls to his father's
  4745.      side and pulls him away from the edge of the abyss to safety.
  4746.      Both the young Jedi and the giant warrior are too weak to move.
  4747.  
  4748. 126  EXT/INT - SPACE BATTLE - FIGHTER AND DEATH STAR               126

  4750.      Rebel fighters follow the Falcon across the surface of the Death
  4751.      Star to the unfinished portion, where they dive into the super-
  4752.      structure of the giant battle station, followed by many TIE
  4753.      fighters.
  4754.  
  4755.                               WEDGE
  4756.                I'm going in.
  4757.  
  4758.                               LANDO
  4759.                Here goes nothing.
  4760.  
  4761.      Three X-wings lead the chase through the ever-narrowing shaft,
  4762.      followed by the Falcon and four other fighters, plus TIE fighters
  4763.      who continually fire at the Rebels. Lights reflect off the
  4764.      pilot's faces as they race through the dark shaft.
  4765.  
  4766.                               LANDO
  4767.                Now lock onto the strongest power source. It
  4768.                should be the power generator.
  4769.  
  4770.                               WEDGE
  4771.                Form up. And stay alert. We could run out of
  4772.                space real fast.
  4773.  
  4774.      The fighters and the Falcon race through the tunnel, still
  4775.      pursued by the TIE fighters. One of the X-wings is hit from
  4776.      behind and explodes.
  4777.  
  4778.                               LANDO
  4779.                Split up and head back to the surface. See if
  4780.                you can get a few of those TIE fighters to
  4781.                follow you.
  4782.  
  4783.                               PILOT
  4784.                Copy, Gold Leader.
  4785.  
  4786.      The Rebel ships peel off pursued by three of the TIE's, while
  4787.      Lando and Wedge continue through the main tunnel. It narrows, and
  4788.      the Falcon scrapes the side dangerously. Two other TIE fighters
  4789.      continue to blast away at them.
  4790.  
  4791.                               LANDO
  4792.                That was too close.
  4793.  
  4794.      Nien Nunb agrees. The battle between the Rebel and Imperial fleet
  4795.      rages on. Several cruisers fire at the giant Super Star
  4796.      Destroyer.

  4816.                Intensify the forward batteries. I don't want
  4817.                anything to get through.

  4819.      The commander is looking out of the window where a damaged Rebel
  4820.      fighter is out of control and heading directly toward the bridge.

  4823.                Intensify forward firepower!

  4826.                It's too late!

  4828.      The Rebel pilot screams as his ship hits the Star Destroyer,
  4829.      causing a huge explosion. The giant battle ship loses control,
  4830.      crashes into the Death Star, and explodes.

  4834.      There is excitement on the bridge as the battle rages on all
  4835.      sides. They cheer as the giant Star Destroyer blows up.

  4839.      Chaos. For the first time, the Death Star is rocked by explosions
  4840.      as the Rebel fleet, no longer backed against a wall, zooms over,
  4841.      unloading a heavy barrage. Imperial troops run in all directions,
  4842.      confused and desperate to escape.
  4843.  
  4844.      In the midst of this uproar, Luke is trying to carry the enormous
  4845.      deadweight of his father's weakening body toward an Imperial
  4846.      shuttle. Finally, Luke collapses from the strain. The explosions
  4847.      grow louder as Vader draws him closer.
  4848.  
  4849.                               VADER (a whisper)
  4850.                Luke, help me take this mask off.
  4851.  
  4852.                               LURE
  4853.                But you'll die.
  4854.  
  4855.                               VADER
  4856.                Nothing can stop that now. Just for once...
  4857.                let me look on you with my own eyes.

  4859.      Slowly, hesitantly, Luke removes the mask from his father's face.
  4860.      There beneath the scars is an elderly man. His eyes do not focus.
  4861.      But the dying man smiles at the sight before him.
  4862.  
  4863.                               ANAKIN (very weak)
  4864.                Now...go, my son. Leave me.
  4865.  
  4866.                               LUKE
  4867.                No. You're coming with me. I can't leave you
  4868.                here. I've got to save you.
  4869.  
  4870.                               ANAKIN
  4871.                You already have, Luke. You were right about
  4872.                me. Tell your sister...you were right.

  4875.                Father... I won't leave you.

  4877.      Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker...Luke's father, dies.

  4879.      A huge explosion rocks the docking bay. Slowly, Luke rises and,
  4880.      half carrying, half dragging the body of his father, stumbles
  4881.      toward a shuttle.

  4885.      The Millennium Falcon leads a swerving bomb run through the
  4886.      immense superstructure of the half-built Death Star. The Rebel
  4887.      Star Cruisers outside continually bombard the huge station. And
  4888.      each direct hit is answered by resonating, chain-reaction
  4889.      explosions within the station itself.

  4893.      Lando's crew fires away at the pursuing TIE fighters as the
  4894.      dashing Baron of Bespin and his alien copilot home in on the main
  4895.      reactor shaft. It is awesome. A lone X-wing is just in front of
  4896.      the Falcon.
  4897.  
  4898.                               WEDGE
  4899.                There it is!
  4900.  
  4901.                               LANDO
  4902.                All right, Wedge. Go for the power regulator
  4903.                on the north tower.
  4904.  
  4905.                               WEDGE
  4906.                Copy, Gold Leader. I'm already on my way out.

  4908.      The X-wing heads for the top of the huge reactor and fires
  4909.      several proton torpedoes at the power regulator, causing a series
  4910.      of small explosions.
  4911.  
  4912.      The Falcon heads for the main reactor, and when it is dangerously
  4913.      close, Lando fires the missiles, which shoot out of the Falcon
  4914.      with a powerful roar, and hit directly at the center of the main
  4915.      reactor.
  4916.  
  4917.      He maneuvers the Falcon out of the winding superstructure just
  4918.      ahead of the continuing chain of explosions.

  4923.      watching the large screen showing the Death Star in the main

  4931.      An Imperial shuttle, with Luke alone in the cockpit, rockets out

  4933.      is blown away. But as Luke pilots toward the safety of the
  4934.      Sanctuary moon, his thoughts - enhanced by the Force - turn to
  4935.      his friends aboard the Millennium Falcon.

  4937.      The Falcon flies at top speed, with a single X-wing as escort,
  4938.      over the endless surface of the Death Star. A series of
  4939.      explosions within the superstructure follow, then swiftly
  4940.      overtake the small craft as it races for an exit.

  4960.      superstructure and whizzes toward the Sanctuary Moon. But the

  4962.      Death Star in a supernova of glory.

  4966.      Han and Leia, Chewie, the droids, the Rebel troops, and the Ewoks
  4967.      all look to the sky as the Death Star reveals itself in a final
  4968.      flash of self-destruction. All except Han cheer, as the thirty-
  4969.      year-old starship pilot feels a deep personal loss.

  4981.      sky, watching for Luke.

  4990.      In the sky above, fireworks explode and Rebel fighters zoom above

  4995.      A huge bonfire is the centerpiece of a wild celebration. Rebels
  4996.      and Ewoks rejoice in the warm glow of firelight, drums beating,
  4997.      singing, dancing, and laughing in the communal language of
  4998.      victory and liberation.
